ALL ABOUT THE WATER CYCLE
Surface Runoff or Infiltration
The heat from the sun drives the water cycle and starts with the evaporation of surface water. The evaporation of surface water is when the liquid water changes states and turns into a gas called water vapor. This water vapor then rises into the atmosphere, which is the sphere of air that separates the surface of the Earth from space.
The atmosphere is relatively warm near the surface of the Earth and gets progressively colder the higher up you go. As the water vapor rises, it cools and condenses, changing from a gas to a liquid and then to a solid when it freezes. This process is known as Condensation. The water condenses around tiny particles of dust that are also in the atmosphere, and we see large collections of condensed water as clouds.
Eventually, the cloud can hold no more water and the condensed water falls back to Earth as precipitation, which can be in the form of rain, snow, sleet, or even hail.
Once back on the surface of the Earth, the water flows to many places; some of it infiltrates the soil and may filter down to become groundwater, and some of it collects and stays on the surface and flows as surface runoff.
From here, the water can take two different paths; water underground may be used by plants in a process known as transpiration, or the water may be used by an animal and some of it evaporates as the animal goes about its day. Some of the water that does not interact with the biosphere collects into bodies of water and is evaporated again by the sun and the cycle begins again.
