“Do you not know that all the runners in a stadium compete, but only one receives the prize? So run to win”. 1 Cor 9:24
The reflective process of learning is essential to any study. Time spent outside of class processing and digesting what has been taught will prove invaluable. The Student Page has been created to help you start the process of studying more carefully by considering what you've learned outside of class. Grace Martial Arts students will receive a Student Handbook. Be sure to read it carefully and ask questions. Beyond instruction and practice, it and the resources listed below will help you create some of the tools to help fortify your progress.
In addition to the Student Handbook, each student should purchase their own notebook, or makimono. The purpose of the makimono, is to help you retain and integrate more thoroughly the instruction provided. Please don't be intimidated or scared off by the idea of taking notes. We aren't talking about "work" here. This is just a tool to help you along the way. You'll find like anything else, whatever you put into it is what you get you. The pictures below are provide to help you get going and more will be provided as you continue to train. Simply fill in and complete the answers as you learn them in class. Notes should reflect detailed instruction as well as your own personal observations and experiences. Please check frequently with your instructor to ensure the accuracy of the notes. Take pictures and videos of yourself periodically to better visualize your own progress. Let your notes grow with you as you chronicle your training and depth of knowledge. Students will be required to present a completed makimono at each test. Failure to do so will automatically prohibit a student from being promoted. Promotions are based on the successful completion of both physical and written requirements.
There are also links below to videos for basic techniques; a set has been created with instruction and a set if you just want to watch and practice along with the video as if you were in class. Take time to look carefully, review, rewind, and make sure you are learning effectively.
Practicing at home is critical to your development. You'll find that your practice outside of class is where you begin to develop and solidify what has taught in class. Consistency over a long period of time is what makes any of us grow. All the hard work in the world isn't going to amount to anything if it's only done once or twice.
