Descrizione: This project proposes a conceptual archaeology of natural intelligence (NI) in ancient Greco-Roman philosophy and science, offering a historically grounded alternative to contemporary frameworks that define intelligence primarily through data processing and task optimization. By excavating ancient debates onthe forms, powers, and limits of intelligence across disciplines ranging from cosmology to medicine, the project aims to recover conceptual resources capable of illuminating both the nature of intelligence itself and its present and future manifestations, natural and artificial alike. The goal is thus to advance the historiography of ancient philosophy and science while generating new conceptual frameworks relevant to ongoing debates about intelligence.
Greek and Roman thinkers developed sophisticated accounts of intelligence as a principle of order — cosmic, political, and ethical — and as a cognitive power oriented toward the fundamental structure of reality. These frameworks, largely marginalized by the digital turn, form the basis of the project’s inquiry, which proceeds through interconnected case studies organized along three research axes.
The first axis examines intelligence as a cosmological and formative principle, focusing on the view (rooted in Plato’s Timaeus) that mathematical structures underpin cognition and the organization of reality and on both critiques and transformations of these ideas from Aristotle through Hellenistic and laterPlatonist traditions.
The second axis addresses practical and productive intelligence — the capacity to organize action, desire, and creative thought according to rational principles. It examines the relationship between intelligence, virtue, and happiness, focusing on Plato’s Republic and its intellectualist moral psychology, before tracing these themes through later debates on weakness of the will and governance of both the self and political community in Imperial Platonism. This axis also explores poetic creation as a form of productive intelligence, investigating how composition came to be understood as governed by principles of unity, necessity, and intelligible organization.
The third axis investigates intelligence in relation to scientific knowledge and reality. Starting from the Platonic thesis that genuine knowledge corresponds to stable intelligible realities, and exploring Platonic and Aristotelian plural accounts of intelligence, it moves through Sophistic critiques, Hellenistic and Neoplatonic theories of cognition and the criteria of truth, considering also newly edited texts such as Galen’s On Demonstration. It also takes up ancient debates on future contingents and Neoplatonic doctrines of hyper-rational powers.
