Workshop goals

This is the first of two workshops planned under the auspices of the ERC project GPRV: Overcoming stellar activity in radial velocity planet searches (Consolidator grant no. 865624, PI S. Aigrain), to be held 3-4 years apart. These workshops aim to bring together a few dozen researchers to discuss recent developments on the characterisation, modelling and mitigation of stellar activity signals in radial velocity datasets.

Topics we hope to address in this first workshop include:

  • Improved data reduction and extraction of radial velocities

  • Characterizing activity in the spectra / line profiles

  • Modelling activity in the time-domain

  • Combining the wavelength/velocity and time-domain approaches

  • Tests on archival and solar data

  • Prospects and challenges for future searches for Earth analogues

  • Organising the community – ongoing collaborations, benchmark datasets, blind exercises, etc…

This is intended as a small, highly interactive, collaborative workshop. The number of in-person participants is restricted to 40 (online participation via Zoom will be possible, but with more limited interactivity). Talk slots will be long enough (30 min each) to enable discussion of relevant technical aspects and ample time for questions. Each half-day session will include at least 30min of discussion on a specific topic (in addition to tea/coffee breaks). One half-day will be dedicated to methods/software tutorials contributed by participants and/or planning for future collaborations. Prospective participants will be given the opportunity to propose talks, tutorials, or discussion topics when registering, and we will use these to construct the final program.
