If you've never contacted your Representative before, we know that it can be a little scary. We REALLY appreciate you stepping out of your comfort zone and stepping up for public libraries here in Indiana. The legislative staff that work for our elected officials are used to fielding calls and understand how important it is to hear from Indiana residents. They are very friendly!
To help minimize anxiety, we've included a sample to help you craft your own personalized message which can be used for phone calls or emails directly to elected officials. We encourage you to make it your own. There may be times when we ask you to share a very specific message - we'll be very clear about those times, but it's very important that we stay in constant contact with our legislators, both State and National, so that we are on their mind if/when libraries come up in conversation in the Indiana General Assembly or Congress. Your stories can absolutely make a difference.

I'm calling in regards to recent legislative changes that directly effect public library funding here in Indiana. Indiana libraries rely on both property and local income taxes to support communities through access to technology, curated book collections, and connection to vital social services. SEA 1 and HB 1406 leave libraries vulnerable to unsustainable funding, or in a worst case scenario, complete defunding.
