Principal Investigator
Swetha Gowrishankar, Ph.D.
Dr. Gowrishankar opened her lab in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology at UIC in 2019. She obtained her PhD in Cell Biology from the National Centre for Biological Sciences, India in 2012 and completed her post-doctoral training at Yale University. D. Gowrishankar trained with Dr. Satyajit Mayor during her PhD and with Dr. Pietro De Camilli and Dr. Shawn Ferguson during her post-doc. Her research has been recognized with funding from the BrightFocus foundation and more recently the Wolverine Foundation. When not studying lysosome biology, Swetha enjoys reading literary fiction and yoga.
Postdoctoral Researchers:
Jean-Michel Paumier, PhD
Dr. Jean-Michel Paumier joined Dr. Gowrishankar’s group as a postdoc beginning 2023, he obtained his PhD in Neurosciences from the university of Aix-Marseille, France in 2019 under the supervision of Dr. Santiago Rivera and Dr. Kevin Baranger. During is PhD he studied the role of specific matrix metalloproteinases in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer’s disease. Before joining Dr. Gowrishankar’s group, he trained as a postdoc at Northwestern University where he studied the role of neurofilament aggregation and autophagy in the context of a rare neurodegenerative disease called Giant Axonal Neuropathy. In his spare time, he loves doing photography as well as playing music.
Mia Krout, Ph.D., MPP
Mia obtained her PhD from UIC in 2022 studying synaptic neurobiology in the lab of Dr Janet Richmond. Due to an interest in Science Policy, Mia also studied health policy while pursuing her PhD and finished a Master of Public Policy in 2021. When Mia is not sciencing she enjoys travelling, cooking, music, reading and being entertained by her two cats.
Ruma Chandran, Ph.D.
Ruma obtained her PhD in Cellular Organization and Signaling in 2022 from the National Centre for Biological Sciences, Bangalore, under the supervision of Dr. Satyajit Mayor. In her spare time, she loves to travel and enjoys music.
Graduate Students:
Elizabeth Somodji
Elizabeth is a graduate student in the UIC Biological Sciences PhD program. She has a Bachelor's of Science degree in Neuroscience from UIC. When not conducting research, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, reading, and creative writing.

Daisy Edmison
Alex Orlowski
Alex graduated from UIC with a Bachelors in Biological Sciences. He enjoys learning about new science and participating in hands-on experimentation. When not working in the lab or doing homework, he likes to play table tennis and go on long bike rides.
Jalen Aguilar
Jalen is a third-year Neuroscience Major on the pre-med track. He hopes to learn more about the brain and how it works through a hands-on approach. As an ex-Football player, he enjoys cheering on the Bears and playing video games in his free time.
Meher Malapaka
Meher is a Master's student at Case Western University. She enjoys learning and gaining experience in science. Apart from school, she has two kids (Aaradhya and Vedanth) and a puppy (Nala). In her free time, she enjoys reading, swimming, and yoga.
Undergraduate Researchers
Arnav Shandilya
Arnav is a second-year UIC student in the GPPA Medical Scholars Program and is pursuing his Bachelor's in Neuroscience before attending medical school. In his free time, he enjoys playing the piano, reading, and playing basketball.
Jose Saltos Potes
Jose is a second-year Biological Sciences major with a Molecular, Cellular and Organismal biology concentration, on the pre-med track. He enjoys learning new science, being able to apply what he learns in research. In his spare time, he likes to listen to music, watch movies, and work out.
Priya Patel
Priya is a third-year Biological Sciences major on the pre-med track. She enjoys applying new things in the lab. In her spare time, she likes to listen to music and read.
Kelly Nguyen
Kelly is currently an international student in her fourth year at the Honors College of UIC, majoring in Biological Sciences. She is eager to explore the world of science through research and hands-on experimentation. After joining the Gowrishankar Lab, she is looking forward to advancing her knowledge, and gaining comprehensive research experience. In her free time, she enjoys listening to music, editing videos, playing tennis, reading novels, and spending time with family and friends.
Volunteers
Nitya Chagoor
Nitya graduated UIC with a Bachelors in Biochemistry. She has been working in the Gowrishankar Lab since January 2021. She is very passionate about science and enjoys applying and expanding her knowledge through research. In her free time, she enjoys reading and spending time with friends.
