Members of the African American and Asian American community are underrepresented in US government

In Ferguson Missouri, "just one out of six city councilors (17 percent) is black" even though the city is 67% Black. (Vox)

"AAPI members made up 0.9% of elected leaders across all levels of government, but 6.1% of the population as of mid-2020." (Politico)

In the history of the United States, there have only been 11 Black senators, with three currently in office. "Until 2013, no two Black senators had been in office at the same time." (Pew Research Center)

AAPI people 0.24 make up only of elected prosecutors: out of 2,539 elected prosecutors across the nation in 2020, the Reflective Democracy Campaign identified 6 who were of AAPI descent. (Reflective Democracy Campaign)

Through this initiative, students will be able to gain the experience, education, and exposure needed to jobs within different branches and aspects of government.

Some benefits of job shadowing include:

Networking: through this program, students will be able to meet similarly driven peers and learn from elected officials, public defenders, prosecutors, healthcare workers, and many more.
Education: students will be able to learn about a wide breadth of civic careers. This experience can enable them to make educated decisions about what kind of career or educational path they wish to take, and may expose them to careers they may have not known were options.
