With the content in the title, in my opinion this is one which could even be a worry to give to children at 10 or 12, and the pixel bandits rating for Goosebumps dead of night is surprisingly a solid no

Goosebumps Dead of Night received lukewarm reviews from critics, with the most common critiques being directed at its short length and high price tag. Pure Nintendo gave the game a 4.5/10, saying the game barely captured what made the books so great.[2] Screen Rant felt the game had an interesting story, but thought the game as a whole was an "unpolished nightmare." Despite this, they considered it to be a fun game to experience.[3] Similarly, Stuart Gipp of Nintendo Life also enjoyed the game and even thought it to be frightening and atmospheric at points, rating the game a 5/10. But like other reviewers, he too criticized the game for its technical problems, lack of content, and price tag.[4] Chris Carter of Destructoid called the game a "disappointment" and rated it a 2/10, advising readers to play Goosebumps: The Game instead.[5]

A greedy price tag, poor performance and an incredibly short campaign make Goosebumps: Dead of Night more likely to be dead on arrival. It's a shame, because it's a well-constructed and entertaining lite survival horror adventure that's probably perfect for kids. Even then, we'd recommend either waiting for a deep, deep sale, or simply renting the excellent 2015 movie. There's a lot to like here, but unfortunately, it's buried under a lot of ugliness. Much like, say... a scary ghoul! Wooooo! Or something.

Goosebumps Dead of Night follows suit of these books with inspirations from the latest film, Goosebumps 2: The Haunted Halloween. The gameplay borrows from other games in the horror genre, but it has been lightened up for kids. The zombie that paces the house is slow and goofy looking, the werewolf looks like he is down to cuddle, and there is an entire section dedicated to smashing walking lawn gnomes. I will say that Murder the Clown is the thing made of nightmares and if I were a child playing this game, I would not sleep for weeks.

The Goosebumps young adult horror novels were a staple for any kid growing up during the early nineties. Trying to think that far back into my youth, they were probably some of my earliest memories. I can still recall nights spent lying on the floor next to my bedroom doorway with one of my blankets, as I read tales about zombie-infested towns, cursed mummies, and one deranged ventriloquist dummy named Slappy. Sixty-two books under the main Goosebumps series were written; some have been reprinted with bonus materials, others turned into comic books or spin-offs, and even two movies starring Jack Black were developed. With the series selling over 400 million copies, almost 70% of the books were adapted for the anthology television series (which I also enjoyed). Goosebumps Dead of Night, reimagines the mobile game Night of Scares, adding additional content and features.

Running around R. L. Stine's house can feel like a toned-down survival horror game. A ghoul wanders the second floor, chasing you if you are seen or heard, so your best approach involves crouching and staying out of its line of sight. The lawn gnomes from Revenge of the Lawn Gnomes peer around corners and doorways, turning off lights across the house. While this may prevent you from locating some of the missing pages, it serves a much more devious plan. Stay shrouded in darkness too long, and the next thing you'll see when you turn around might be Murder the Clown (A Nightmare on Clown Street). Dr. Brewer's overgrown laboratory is infested with deadly plants (Lost in Stinkeye Swamp), and killer bees (Why I'm Afraid of Bees). The gameplay changes, removing the previously necessary stealth-based tactics. Instead, you'll need to collect different-colored plants to open passages, use flowers to manipulate bees, and avoid falling prey to venus fly traps and sinking lily pads. Tesla's Wardenclyffe Tower feels completely different, adding even further puzzle elements by realigning the flow of electricity while avoiding a handful of Annihilator 3000's (Toy Terror: Batteries Included) patrolling the area. I wasn't expecting the killer gummy bears from the second movie (Haunted Halloween) making a return, but it felt satisfying seeing them explode into chunks by using Tesla's secret weapon.

Rather than following the movie's plot, the game instead tells a whole different story; the player assumes the role of "Twist", a young boy who snuck into R. L. Stine's (the fictionalized version portrayed by Jack Black) mansion one night, only to discover Stine missing, and there are monsters on the loose...
