Hey Reddit, I'm planning a trip and I'm wondering, what is the best way to find cheap flights? I've tried searching on different websites and comparison tools, but the prices seem to be all over the place. I'm wondering if there are any insider tips or lesser-known strategies that I could use to save money on my airfare.

I've heard that some people use specific credit cards or loyalty programs to earn rewards and discounts, but I'm not sure where to start. Are there any particular websites or forums that are especially helpful for finding cheap flights? Or maybe there are certain times of the year or days of the week that are better for booking flights?

For most carriers, one-way flights are significantly more than half the cost of a roundtrip flight. If you want to fly into a different airport than you will depart from, it's usually better to book an open-jaw flight (flying A to B, then C to A) on one itinerary rather than two separate one-ways. Airlines whose one-way flights are around half of a roundtrip include jetBlue, Norwegian, Condor, and basically all intra-continental budget carriers like Ryanair and Air Asia.

Budget airlines have proliferated in recent years, giving passengers more choice when it comes to cheap flights. Of course, not all budget airlines are equal. Our favorites, like AirAsia X and LEVEL, offer comfortable seats, reliable service, and reasonable fees.

Airfare pricing is extremely complex, with algorithms changing fares minute by minute. It puts the average consumer at a significant disadvantage and far too often results in travelers overpaying for flights.

Sidenote: If you're looking to book the cheapest flights, be sure to search more than one date. (Clicking the calendar in Google Flights shows you cheap tickets for two months at a time.)

Our three favorite tools to search for flights are Google Flights, Priceline, and Momondo. There are also some more complex ones like the ITA Matrix, SkyScanner, and various plugins, but for most folks Google Flights, Priceline, and Momondo are plenty.

Just like winter coats are cheaper in summer and swimsuits are on sale in winter, the best fares for peak season are typically found in the opposite season. This means you should be booking your summer vacations around Christmas and New Year's, and you should be checking out flights for your winter holiday trips during June and July for the best fares.

Okay, but how can I act fast enough to snag a great fare if you've got, you know, responsibilities and stuff? Well, there's a handy regulation called the 24-hour rule that says for flights to or from the US, airlines must allow you to cancel free within 24 hours.

There are many ways to find cheap flights, and most people try to find the cheapest one possible when they go on vacation. There are some great search engines out there like Momondo and Skyscanner to help you, but should you always go for the cheapest flight? Is that always the best way to go?

To bad i wasnt informed of this before i just paid for the wifi for my first flight...but apparently now instead of paying $8 to have wifi on all your Southwest flights for the entire day you have to pay $8 for every flight that day if you want wifi...so at least $16 for 95% of the flights unless you're lucky enough to be on one of the very rare non stop flights. That's absolutely ridiculous...especially when the Wi-Fi is slow if it works at all most the time - my flight 2 weeks ago, had a layover but my other flight was on the same exact plane (6+ hours on the same plane), and the wifi was broken and not one of the flight attendants even attempted to see what could be done. They were actually rather rude about it.

After the fiasco this last holiday season (which affected my flights as well) you'd think Southwest would be trying their best to not lose customers. Low cost airline? Nope - It's one of the most expensive anymore. Plus the fact a non stop flight is a rarity, flights are delayed more often than not, the new boarding pass set up is a joke, the flight crews are not nearly as friendly or good as they used to be, and now crappy (regardless of them changing companies) wifi that they wanna charge more for on top of all of it. Just about the only good thing SW has going for them is your first 2 checked bags fly free...but I'm sure that won't last long either at the rate their headed.

Well said. With most flights being inside of two hours, I can do without wifi for that amount of time. Also, considering that the wifi will be unavailable on the beginning and ending leg of the flight, how much real time to you get?

I always get a little chuckle out of it when I read comments like:

"unless you're lucky enough to be on one of the very rare non stop flights"

I believe all Southwest flights are nonstop.... they just may not be nonstop between the cities you prefer.

Flight search websites compare fares available at multiple airlines, online travel agencies, or both, then sort them by price. I've tested a number of them on a variety of journeys, both transatlantic and within Europe. Overall, Kayak has the best results for both intercontinental and intra-European flights on a combination of mainstream and budget carriers. An alternative is Google Flights, which has an easy-to-use system to track prices and lets you see how much you'd save by departing a day earlier or later.

A couple of sites are better for flights to Europe than flights within Europe, and some nice features make their results easier to navigate. Expedia is easy to use and consistent at finding good fares. CheapoAir offers pricing tables for mixed-airline flights to and from Europe. (For cheap flights within Europe, I prefer Skyscanner.)

Consider flying into one city and out of another. Since it rarely makes sense to spend time and money returning to your starting point, this strategy can be very efficient. For most "multicity" flights, the fare is figured simply by taking half of the round-trip cost for each of those airports.

While it's possible to book your flights on most search sites (they certainly hope you will, to garner their commission), I typically use these sites only as a first step. Once I've zeroed in on which airline has the best deal for my trip, I check the airline's own site to compare fares. You can often avoid added costs by booking direct (the commissions are charged either as higher prices or in the form of fees for booking through a third party). And airlines may offer bonuses (such as extra frequent-flier miles) to those who book direct.

Buy your tickets at the right time (to the extent possible). Airfares flex like crazy, but in general it's wise to start looking for international flights at least four to six months before your trip, especially for travel in spring, summer, or fall. Good deals on winter travel (November through March) can usually be purchased a month or so in advance, with the exception of winter breaks and holidays, which require even earlier booking. Year-round, it's generally cheaper to book midweek.

Be ready to buy. Given how erratic airline pricing can be, you want to be ready to pounce on a good fare when you see it. As you delay, dates sell out and prices generally go up. Figure out in advance what constitutes a good fare, then grab it when you find it. A few airlines will let you pay a small fee to hold a fare for three days. US Department of Transportation regulations state that you're entitled to cancel or change a flight within 24 hours of purchase without a fee, but if you're changing flights, you may have to pay the fare difference. Read the fine print before buying to make sure you understand cancellation and change fees.

You can look at the flights today, next week, and when you travel and see if WGA fares are still available throughout - that doesn't guarantee availablility in the future but if you look at the flights today and this week and all the WGA are gone, there's a good chance that route tends to fill up. If the fare is acceptable today, I tend to book now and re-book later if prices go down. There are a few things that make fares go down (general sales, empty seats on a particular route they want to fill) and lots of things that make the go up (generally demand goes up closer to flight date). But most airlines don't start out with their lowest price when first released either...some people say 1-2 months out is a good time. Who knows!

Thankfully, Southwest just improved their online booking system so you can more easily compare the fare difference among all of your flight options that day (or any other day) if you're changing flights. If you do decide to change flights, just remember to do it up to 10 minutes before departure, on either leg. (Otherwise, you lose the ticket and the funds associated with it).

But one thing you can always count on is Southwest's legendary low fares, especially on Intra-CA routes, like Oakland to San Diego. I've been flying Southwest for over 20 years here in California and, based on my experience, off-peak fares drop as low as $49 o/w during a regular sale on that route. Even lower on their rarely-occurring anniversary sale. But remember, low fares are typically only found on lower demand flights during less traveled days. ff782bc1db
