Great start to the season! We had nice racing weather and it was a good opportunity to shake the rust off with moderate competition and a shorter distance.
The freshmen had a strong showing for their first race, taking 2nd place among freshman squads, out of 14 scoring schools. Gavin had an especially strong showing, and Joe finished nicely. Roginski looked good for the first mile but faded a bit at the end. The sophomores scored a commanding 44 points, with John and Ryan powering through most of the race in 1-2. John T and Will also looked very strong in the next pack, and John H nicely rounded out the scoring 5. A strong debut race by Henry, and some good improved performances by Hannafin and Peterson. In the junior race Harry had our best time of the day and an awesome dash to the finish to get edged out for 1st. Jack had his first strong race in over a year, which was great to see, and Will had a solid debut as well. 5th place overall as our 4-5 were back a bit. The seniors also had a strong showing in 3rd place, led by Jacob in 6th. A good 1.5 miles followed by a bit of a fade, but overall a decent start. Michael also looked strong in spite of a minor injury. Poz looked strong as well, and some other guys had fine first efforts for the season, especially Saunders and Hofer.

I thought the varsity squad had an outstanding debut 5K. Strong pack running, and everyone stayed strong through the end in spite of the hill. A 34 second spread for the top 5 is a great start too. The overall results reflect runners who had the strongest finish. Harry continues to race well at the end and makes his way onto the all-time performance list for the meet. Jacob rallied from a rough patch for a strong finish as well. John led the pack early and seems to be hanging on longer, and hopefully will continue to due so. Ryan faded a bit due to some back soreness which hopefully will be worked out. Will also had a strong race and was the only guy to beat "his man" for the GC squad. Michael, Jack, and Will all had strong races too. In the Varsity B race we had some unexpected competition from a Briar Woods team that ran their "A" squad. Among the B squads we had the top group, with an especially strong 1-4 pack of Hurley, Travis, Farley, and Poz. Travis led this group most of the way but faded in the last half. We had a big gap to our 5th man, and the top 5 from GC were in that gap - need to find a way to close it up. The JV race featured some great debut 5K performances. I was also impressed with improved racing from several sophomores. A lot of the seniors, by contrast, have a ways to go to reach their end-of-season status from last year. Podratski ran a tough race, dueling with a runner from South Lakes most of the way. Macyko and Hannafin showed great improvement from last year and were among the scorers for our 3rd place finish. Note that Sherando, which finished 2nd, did not contest the Varsity B race and thus we were the 2nd place "3rd squad" in the meet. Also a nice first race from freshman Giannini and first 5K for Roginski.
MOPs - Varsity - Jacob Floam. Varsity B - Hurley. JV - Podratski.

A solid showing in the rainy conditions. In the varsity race, our pack had another tough showing. John, Jacob, and Harry running especially well together. Ryan seems to be hampered by his back and dropped a bit especially at the end, while Will looked very tough and hung close. Should be a good race with Loyola when we see they again. The question is, can anyone move up?? Jack looked strong and consistent in the 6th slot, and Michael struggled with abdominal pains. In the JV race, we had 3 in the top 10 and two freshmen at 15-20, but that was unfortunately not enough to topple the host school. John Travis looked strong throughout in spite of ending up in no-man's land. Will also looked tough, while Jon started strong and then faded a bit. Daniel and Gavin handled the rain well. Several guys knocking on the door for letter times which is nice to see. In the open race, Jack had a very strong first mile and then held on for the best race of the day. We had a big gap to our next guy, and if this race were scored that would have hurt a lot (although there was no official scoring the software gave us 4th with 121 points). Lot's of guys with potential and talent who need to get into better shape in the next month. Giannini and Roginski were the top freshmen in the race. Gretschel, Hannafin, and Jay all had strong performances.
MOPs - Varsity - Colucci, who is anchoring the lead pack; JV - Travis; Open race - Poz and Jay.

A good overall team race leading to a 3rd place finish today! Since this race scores 12 varsity runners, the scores reward teams with good overall depth - and thus we can make a claim to be one of the deepest teams in the DC region.
Another measure of depth is to look at how the JV squads fared when taking out the top ~28 runners on the team. So schools raced guys who would have qualified for the championship races, so it's always hard to make straight comparisons. But the freshman/sophomore JV squad started off the day with a win! We also picked up an impressive 8 medal spots. Nasir and Sean had the best races of the day, but a strong pack cruised through behind them. The jr/sr JV squad was not quite as strong, partly due to a small junior class - which meant this race consisted mostly of seniors. Holden led the way to a 5th place finish, and David and Brendan also had solid races. Phil showed off his 800 speed by passing quite a few guys on the last stretch.
In the freshman race, we had a strong showing to finish 4th. Behind a very strong Trinity team, we easily had the top frosh/soph combination for the day with only 104 points. Daniel had a strong race, while Gavin continues to be a solid contributor and tough competitor. David G showed nice improvement with a time that easily surpasses the upperclassman letter standard. Roginski and Calogero also continue to impress. There will be several more opportunities to race as a freshman squad, including next week - I am excited to see what you guys can do.
The sophomores had a great race as expected, overshadowed only by Trinity. John and Ryan had solid races, though neither finished quite as well in the last 800 as we would hope. Gives us something to work on. The next pack was outstanding, with Hodges making a big move to run with John and Will. Throw in the missing Hurley, and this has to be one of the better sophomore squads around, Trinity notwithstanding.
The juniors raced quite well, grabbing 3rd place and not too far out of 1st. Harry looked strong throughout, including a fast kick that unfortunately was matched by a couple of slightly faster finishes. Will and Jack had solid races to round out the scoring. John Hills had his best race of the season so far, running with Quinn.
The seniors pulled in the most points, but saw a breakout race by Michael Gold, who got out well and moved up through the middle of the race, looking strong throughout.
MOPs - fr/so JV - Nasir; freshmen - Giannini; Sophomores - Hodges; juniors - John Hills; seniors - Gold.

A great day for a bunch of PRs. Always fun to run fast this time of year when everyone's training is finally starting to come together. It was disappointing to be missing 3 of our top 9 guys, but hopefully all will be healthy for next weekend.
The JV underclassmen started us off with an impressive race near the front. David continues to improve and looked outstanding, as did Jon, Henry, and Gavin. There was a big gap to Daniel, who is still coming off an illness and hopefully will be closer next week. If we had John T and Will S in the race we would have beaten Loudoun Valley; a 2nd place finish is impressive in any case. Also strong races by Harrington, Nasir, and many others.
The JV upperclassmen also had some impressive races, although the team was not as competitive with no runners in the front group. Will G finally returned to expected form with a nice breakout race, while Brendan, Quinn, and John Hills all looked great. Several other big PRs sprinkled throughout the race.
The varsity had a solid race considering we were missing 2 of our top runners. Will's race was particularly impressive, given that up until 30 minutes before the race we did not know if he would run. Turned out to be a great choice! Ryan also had his best race of the season, while John, Jack, Michael, and JT also had PRs! A full squad would get to within striking distance of the top two teams but would still end up 3rd.
Most Outstanding Performances - JV underclassmen - Hurley and Roginski. JV upperclassmen - Hills, Guarini. Varsity - Lockett and Beckham. Honorable mention to McCann

Disappointing though it was to get 2nd, this was still a solid performance for us. We have finished 1st or 2nd at the conference title in all but one year since 2001, so it's nice to extend that streak. The varsity guys were in the mix until 800m to go, and then could not hang on to close it out. Ryan and John looked especially strong hanging on to the GC 2-4 pack. Harry and Jacob were both hobbled a bit by injuries, so that affected their placing especially in the closing 800. We ended up with 5 guys all conference, which is outstanding! Jack gets the Siksorsky award for finishing 13th and missing all-WCAC by one spot, and beat all but one runner in the conference not from GC or Gonzaga, and Michael got nipped by only 3 runners from other schools. In the Varsity B race we ran a close 2nd to Good Counsel, led by a tough race by Travis up front. John ended up leading most of the way which cost him on the final kick. Hopefully you can turn the tables at the private schools championship. Will and Jon seemed a bit off their game, enough to keep us from making it really close or taking the win. In the freshman race, David and Gavin ran a great wire-to-wire battle with a near-tie for the finish. David R and Daniel almost made it a sweep, which was terrific. An impressive pack of guys in places 6-10 as well, lead by a great finishing kick by Razjae.
Most Outstanding Performances - Varsity - Lockett; Varsity B - Travis, Gately; Freshmen - Giannini and Farley.

Lots of great performances on this windy day, though the team results were a little short of what we were hoping for. Good Counsel ran a great team race, so there was no way we were going to beat them, but we fell short of the goal of keeping things closer. Except for John and Jack, everyone of the varsity was a bit flat. We seemed to be in the mix well at the mile mark, and with 1000 to go John was in a great spot while Ryan was not too far back of the pack. The next three were giving chase and had a chance to grab a few places with a strong final push. This was our 3rd 2nd place- finish in the history of the DC-MD championships, with is "nothing to sneeze at"!
The JV guys ran a strong overall race but could not quite overcome the depth of Good Counsel and St. Albans after Spartin had to drop out with IT band issues. John Travis ran a great race out front and put himself in position to win. Guarini had another strong race, as did the top two freshmen - still racing without spikes! Hurley seems a little off his game, but hopefully can bounce back next week. Other strong performances from Hills, Ritter, and Andy Beckham. Quinn had his best race of the season, but still seems to have more racing in him.
Most Outstanding Performances: Varsity - Colucci and Beckham; JV - Travis, Guarini

A solid day of racing overall. The freshmen started things off with a great team race, 21 points to dominate the field. David and Gavin went out hard to go after the school record, and David was able to hang on to beat the mark by 4 seconds. Gavin also came very close to the 9:00 barrier. The top 4 Gonzaga performances in history now belong to current members of the team, as well as 12 performances on the list. Daniel pushed nicely at the end to hold off the charging 4-5 runners, while the other 4 guys were in a nice pack. For the JV, we had some strong overall performances but were surprised by the depth of runners from BC. John fought hard in the lead, while Jon H and Henry also had good race. Saunders, Hills, Ritter, and Poz made a nice pack, and Gately seems to be trending back upward. Remember that we typically see a 2:50-3:10 difference at WakeMed for similar performances. In the varsity race, we go 4 strong performances but unfortunately we needed 5 or more to pick up the win against a strong Fairfield squad. We have finished 2nd place 3 years in a row and 4 of the last 5. John C continues to race well and led the group, while Jacob and Will had solid races to grab the next two spots. Jack also ran well to take our 5th position. Ryan and Harry both seemed to be off significantly from their potential.
Most Outstanding Performances: Varsity - Colucci; JV - Travis, Hurley, Chaleki; Freshmen: Giannini and O'Keefe

A mix of good and " not as good" to close the season. On the positive side, some strong performances and our best finish at this race since 2010. In addition, our 5-man average was our 4th-best ever. On the other hand, we did not do as well as our potential suggests we could; if we could have replicated our placing vs. Good Counsel from the beginning of the season, for example, we would have scored around 280 points and finished in 10th place. It was nice to see Harry return to form, and too bad he does not have another week or two racing to get back into maximal shape. Will also had a strong race, while John, Jacob, and Jack hung in for solid times. Ryan was affected by illness and never really got into the race, and Michael did not really get into the race either. For the open race, the two freshmen sparkled with PRs and times demonstrating lots of potential. John T seemed to get caught up in the fray early and never really got to his intended position, while Henry fell apart in the last 1000 after a strong first portion of the race. Will and Jack closed their careers on solid notes, while the heat seemed to affect some others. We will do some analysis to see if there is a heat correction factor for comparison to previous years - my guess is that it could be in the 5-10 second range.
Most Outstanding Performances: Varsity - Monroe and McCann. Open race - Giannini and Farley
