Measure. Understand. Improve Ecosystem and Soil Health.
State-of-the-art towers that measure gas and energy exchanges between soils, plants, and the atmosphere. Our 15 towers collect CO₂, CH₄, N₂O, meteorological, and soil data continuously
Using this method, we track carbon accumulation, ecosystem cooling/warming, and soil health at large scales—without disturbing the environment.
Measure soil health and gas fluxes from soils (CO₂, CH₄, and N₂O) to understand how soils influence the atmosphere and the overall ecosystem health.
The Lab has several gas analyzers to measure CO₂ (two LI-8100, three LI-870 with multiplexer capabilities), N₂O (two LI-7820) and CH₄ (one LI-7810 CH4/CO2/H2O Trace Gas Analyzer) fluxes from soils.
One of the most powerful tools for tracking carbon in soils and ecosystems. Our Picarro G2201-i measures δ¹³C in CO₂, CH₄, and solid samples, helping researchers understand carbon capture, storage, and greenhouse gas fluxes. Perfect for studying soil health, carbon cycling, and sustainable agricultural practices.
Our lab investigates soil health across physical, biological, and chemical dimensions. We measure carbon and nitrogen fluxes with LICORs, analyze microbial enzyme activity with the Tecan Infinite M Nano+, fractionate carbon pools with our Picarro G2201-i and Combustion Module, measure nutrients with our Genesis 180, and assess soil physical properties—including bulk density, pH, infiltration, water-holding capacity, and aggregate stability—using standard lab and field methods.
We assess plant performance using two LICOR 6800 systems to measure photosynthesis and fluorescence. Plant nutrient and carbon content are analyzed with the Tecan Infinite M Nano+ and the Picarro Combustion Module, providing a comprehensive view of plant physiological and nutritional status.
Essential tools for collecting soil profiles, our soil core samplers allow researchers to study soil structure, composition, and microbial communities with minimal disturbance. They are ideal for investigating soil carbon, nutrient distribution, moisture content, and the effects of land management practices on soil health.
To complement our specialized instruments, our lab is equipped with centrifuges, microscopes, lab incubators, ovens, digestors, precision scales, sieves, shakers, and fridges and freezers for sample preparation, handling, and analysis. A fume hood ensures safe chemical handling during extractions and other procedures. These tools support accurate, efficient, and safe lab workflows.
