The video was horrid to slap together in Adobe Spark. Since Adobe spark is intended to make 30second commercials. I used free stock footage for parts of it. Hopefully I or someone else will make another video for it.
Nonetheless, I thought the song needed a video because the lyrics move by so fast.
People don't like not knowing EXACTLY what a song is saying nowadays. I grew up in an era where the song was saying whatever you heard it say, and there was little to no way of checking it out. What fun though, don't you think? Songs were largely about what you thought they were about. It was a sort of "one size fits all" world when it came to lyics.
It's an awkward thing to talk about, but I was compelled (apparently) to address this through this song. I've been around many vegans in my life, some pleasant, others not so pleasant. And I personally witnessed someone being ostracized, shunned because they stopped being vegan.
I played everything you hear on this track. It was recorded and mixed in Pro-Tools 9. Some plug-ins used were D-Verb and Sans Amp. The electric lead guitar is a virtual instrument. I've had to work with virtual guitars due to me not having a good rig. And as much as I can ungratefully hate them, in the end I have to be thankful that I can at least pull off a decent enough guitar tone that it sounds pretty much like a guitar. All the acoustic guitars are real. Everything else came from Xpand2 in ProTools.
The production of Vegan was difficult in the sense that there was a lot of sonic material to work with. And a session in which I learned full well that many instruments need to be EQ'd to a more narrow frequency. It took quite a bit of work to get things to stop stepping on each other, and in my oppinion they still kind of do. But, it's OK, because what I was going for in this tune was a "band" type sound. Like a wall of sound coming from amps and drums. Instead of distinct isolated instruments, I was going for everything sounding somewhat the same, as if it were coming from the same room.
I was also going for a The Smiths type of sound, for the irony of it. Morrissey being Vegan, and tragic and all in his persona. I love Morrissey, and mean no offense, but I believe that everything should lend itself to comedy and sense of humor. - The funny thing is, that if someone gets offended by this song, it's exactly the kind of person that part of the song is about, haha.
This song is part of a one-by-one release album named Binary Love (Songs about Technology and Modern Culture) Other already released songs that belong to that album are Bitcoin (I Love You), and I Don't Think You Understand.
As for the artwork for this single. I really tried to incorporate imagery inspired by Upton Sinclair's novel The Jungle due to it's harrowing tale of an immigrant family who moved into Chicago's meat district in 1920's America. I love what the book taught me, but it wasn't working for such a satirical song.
I then tried to incorporate native American's into it. It's a cherished culture by all. It's idolized and for good reason. But, they were hunter gatherers, and it's part of my biological lineage. I thought it odd, if I were coming at eating meat from that angle. Would someone be OK with telling me that I couldn't keep these traditions that existed harmoniously with mother earth (in the hard way that nature can be harmonious at times), and balanced way of life? None of the Native American images that I was working with worked. They didn't translate to what I was trying to say. So, I used a jar of mayonnaise with a tomahawk instead. Because American's LOVE mayonnaise!
Vegan alternate cover.
Vegan
I know that I was vegan when I first met you
But I don't wanna be vegan anymore
I know that I was vegan when I first met you
But I don't wanna be vegan anymore
Because I realize that I'm a killer
And I realize that I'm a hunter
Don't wanna support the factory farmers
Just don't wanna be vegan anymore
I know that I grew my own food when I met you
But I don't wanna grow my food anymore
I know that I grew my own food when I met you
But I don't wanna grow my food anymore
Because I realize I'm not a farmer
In '08 I voted for Obama
I'm just trying to get my life in order
But I don't wanna be vegan anymore
I love myself
I love the world
I know that you can't stand to love your life
I love myself
I love our life
I'm not afraid when I look in my eyes
I know that I did yoga when I first met you
But I don't wanna do yoga anymore
I know that I did yoga when I first met you
But I don't wanna do yoga anymore
Because I realize I like Jujitsu
I don't wanna out guru the guru
Yes, I'm trying to get my life in order
But I don't wanna do yoga anymore
Because I realize I like Jujitsu
I don't wanna out guru the guru
Yes, I'm trying to get my life in order
But I don't wanna do yoga anymore
I love myself
I love the world
I know that you can't stand to love your life
I love myself
I love our life
I'm not afraid when I look in my eyes
Gather around everyone
We're here in protest
Against the cruelty
That all of these awful meat eating bastards
Have caused in the world
They deserve to die
They deserve to suffer and die
For all of the torment that they've caused
These poor innocent animals
The only way is to eradicate them all!
I know that I was vegan when I first met you
But I don't wanna be vegan anymore
I know that I was vegan when I first met you
But I don't wanna be vegan anymore
Because I think that you're an awful person
And sometimes I think that you might be worse than
All of the people you chastise
And I just don't wanna be a vegan anymore
I know that you're gonna talk about me
And I know you're gonna ostracize me
I know you're not gonna invite me
to any of the vegan parties anymore
