The ultimate dream includes dozens of acres, orchards you can get lost in, native prairies with walking paths throughout, and a community farm share program out of my huge vegetable farm. I would love to have kids events, family educational days, and partnerships with local schools. My farm would be a haven for queer, disabled, and marginalized people to find friendship and peace. All of my practices would give back to the soil and do good for the living things around me.
While I am not so naive to think all of that is likely on a couple of teacher’s salaries, it is good to have goals!
More realistically:
If we do buy land, I plan to focus on native perennials like fruit and nut trees, berries, asparagus, etc.
I would like a cold-room or root cellar to store my squashes, alliums, apples, potatoes, etc.
Community will always be a focus
Regardless of where we live:
I will always grow what I can, where I am.
I hope to start garden-planning/consulting again soon!
We will be introducing native mason bees into our operation as soon as we can.
I would love to teach a course on how to store food long-term, and how to grow in small spaces (I do a lot of freezing and dehydrating).
I plan to keep getting better at saving my own seeds (and labeling them!)
