Cycling on UK roads is widely perceived as dangerous, but it really isn't. The latest available statistics show that 141 cyclists were killed on the roads in 2020. Those are tragedies for everyone involved, but to put it in perspective, people cycled a total of just over five billion miles in the UK that year.
Assuming an average speed of 10mph, they would have been riding for 500 million hours. That works out as 3.5 million hours, or 400 years, cycled for each death that resulted.
400 years is about five times the average life expectancy in this country. In other words, you are actually five times safer while cycling than while not cycling. So get on your bike if you value your life.
You know it makes sense. Or does it?
