What better way to celebrate 50 years of a loving marriage than with a Tour de France? We're seasoned travelers and had been to Paris before, but this time we wanted to explore more, especially in Provence. We chose a Rick Steves My Way Tour for 13 days in May, 2025, and extended it on both ends.
We have followed Rick for years on PBS. We learned how to travel light with help from the website tutorial, RS luggage, and lots of practice, and we even got to meet the man himself at a travel show in Chicago several years ago. (We personally thanked him for enabling us with travel skills.) We have an autographed copy of Europe Through the Back Door and have used several RS guidebooks, but we've never taken one of his tours. As independent travelers, this My Way tour seemed like the optimal way to combine structure with serendipity - much like our marriage.
I (Ken) spent six months in daily French lessons to prepare, and I'm glad I did. Locals responded kindly, and we were able to use public transit without trepidation.
13 Days of Structure
With two nights in each of six locations, we had time for adventures without feeling rushed. Margaret was the perfect guide to transform our eclectic group into a community. She has worked with Rick since 1991, and she knows France like the back of her hand. She offered resources and suggestions, then gave us plenty of time and space to be explorers.
