The Suspect
Joseph James DeAngelo Jr., the defendant, was born on November 8, 1945, in Bath, New York. He was a military brat and then joined the United States Navy. Following his time in the military, DeAngelo became a police officer in California in the 1970s. Ironically, this might have worked in his favor during his escape because the police were chasing an intelligent man well-trained in law enforcement who knew the tricks of the game.
Victims
The victims of the Golden State Killer were different people with different backgrounds, and gender and age were not barriers for him. Women and men were among them, along with children. Young people and middle-aged persons were also in the group.
The first recognized murder victim, Claude Snelling, was a college teacher in Visalia. It is rumored that he was shot while trying to stop an unknown person from abducting his daughter.
Katie and Brian Maggiore (1978)
This young couple was killed with guns while taking a walk with their dog in Rancho Cordova. The attack was particularly nasty and revealing how DeAngelo's mischief intensified.
Charlene and Lyman Smith (1980)
The Smiths were murdered in the state of Ventura. Their deaths were connected to DeAngelo using genetic profiling after several years.
