Teenagers Making Meals to Help Fight Local and Global Food Insecurity
Food insecurity is one of the biggest global issues of our time. For my project, I am aiming to address this issue by creating a team that would make meals for programs such as Operation Hope and food pantries. Our group meets twice a month to prepare a designated amount of food to be served by our team and Operation Hope volunteers. Our program works not only to bring attention to hunger issues in different communities, but making sure nutritious meals are consistently provided to food kitchens. According to Feeding America, every community in the country is home to families who struggle with food insecurity including rural and suburban communities. Living in a suburban community myself, I would like to bring attention to this issue. Also according to Feeding America, many households that experience food insecurity do not qualify for federal nutrition programs and need to rely on their local food banks and other hunger relief organizations for support. By being a consistent and reliable source of nutritious meals, we are addressing and bringing attention to this not only local, but global issue. In Fairfield County, the annual food budget shortfall is almost 59 million dollars, and in the country it is 22 billion dollars. By doing our work and promoting sustainability through online resources and the continuation of our project, we can do our part to help this shortfall.
By communicating with local food pantries, I have learned that consistency of meals is an issue
Nutritious, nutrient rich meals can be at times difficult to get into the pantries
I want to work to break down stigmas surrounding individuals who rely on food banks
I love volunteering at Operation Hope and was inspired by the Sow What journey I took part in
