Our initial role on the team was Digital Content Production, but with our graphic design expertise, we were tasked with creating marketing collateral for the station. We adhered to Jackson State University’s brand colors as the color palette, aligning with the fact that the station is owned and operated by JSU. One of the station’s key goals was to connect with a younger, urban audience that public radio has traditionally struggled to reach. To achieve this, we incorporated dynamic design elements like paint splashes to resonate with the target demographic.
The Plug Jxn was created at a time when there was no source for inclusive event listings. This platform provided events for every demographic. We chose the color yellow for its subconscious connotation of optimism and energy, grounding it with the neutrals of black and white. Red was later introduced into the color scheme when The Plug launched a new segment called The Plug Jxn Eats, where they reviewed local restaurants. We decided to leverage the psychology of red, known to increase appetite, to enhance the segment’s appeal.
During the health crisis, we were honored to create a vaccination campaign for Northeast Texas’s largest healthcare system, prioritizing impactful, inclusive visual branding. With a large Hispanic community in the area, we recognized the importance of culturally sensitive design. Instead of a single bilingual campaign, we crafted two distinct campaigns—one in English and one in Spanish—to ensure every audience felt valued and seen. This thoughtful approach to visual branding helped deliver a message of inclusivity and respect to a diverse community.
