Project Description
For this project, I looked at myself and the society clearly.
The result said: "Oh dear....you really do seem ADDICTED to social media [Time To Log Off Social Media Addiction Quiz]. You NEED to get a grip on your social media habits! Scrolling through social media is your number one past time - you're never off the .gram, or TikTok, or Twitter or... (insert your favourite platform here). You spend an excessive amount of your day on social media, feeling that if something isn't recorded and posted on one of your accounts it didn't really happen. Sleep, eating, work, even your relationships, are all suffering as a result. Did you know that, in a famous study from Denmark, adults who spent a week off social media felt much happier with their lives? They also reported an increase in real-world social activity and were significantly less angry and lonely than those who stayed on social media. It's time to take your social media addiction seriously and embark on a digital detox." To be honest, I was not surprised by the result. I knew my social media use was through the roof. I could feel it. I want to cut down the usuage and focus in more important things, but I can't seem to stop myself from touching my. phone. I hope I'll be able to find a way to stop this addiction soon.
One statistic that stood out to me from the Pew Research Center report is this:
About 84% of U.S. adults say they use YouTube, making it by far the most widely used social media platform in the survey. What makes this interesting is how dominant YouTube is compared to other platforms. Even Facebook, which is often talked about as “declining,” is still used by about 71% of adults—but YouTube is ahead by a wide margin. It also crosses age groups more evenly than most other apps, meaning it isn’t just popular with younger users; older adults also use it heavily. This stood out because it shows that despite all the newer apps (like TikTok or Instagram), YouTube still functions as the closest thing to a “universal” social media platform in the U.S.
There are many negative effect rather than positive that comes in my mind when I think of social media. Being able to connect with my family even if we are on whole different side of the globe is a really wonderful feeling. Social medias like youtube and google allows for diverse knowledge gain. But the way some people do inhumane things so easily and conveniently through these medias sickens me and shakes me to core. This makes me thinking: Would humankind be better off without social media?
I knew that my addictions were going out of hand but validating it through the survey was really impactful. I think I'll be able to control this if I put in the effort. Thinking about impact of social media evoked my feeling a tad to much but I think these are the things that we ought to talk whenever chance presents. If not its just gonna be another headlines and our society is gonna normalize these absurd things.
