We are working to establish and run a social housing co-operative that adheres to the seven co-operative principles as established by the International Co-operative Alliance:
Voluntary and Open Membership
Democratic Member Control
Member Economic Participation
Autonomy and Independence
Education, Training, Information
Co-operation among Co-operatives
Concern for Community
In the midst of an increasingly dysfunctional, precarious, and exploitative private rental market, we aim to expand and promote the cooperative housing movement by building an affordable co-operative housing project, with an emphasis on sustainability, eco-friendly technology, intersectionality, and community engagement.
Our Objectives:
- To create an outward-facing, community-led housing co-operative in the heart of South Manchester. This will include up to 10 residential buildings for around 38 people and a community space where activities and events can take place. These events would include educational workshops, open days, various classes, and potentially a community cafe.
- To be an environmentally friendly co-operative, incorporating sustainability into our everyday lives, the dwellings and the building process. We aim to be zero-carbon.
- To act as a living example of how renewable energy and low-carbon technology can work in an everyday neighbourhood, inspiring others to reduce emissions in similar ways.
- To create a safe, affordable and inclusive space, where a community of socially responsible, creative and co-operative tenants can flourish at home and in their life and work.
