Bridging Gaps for Underrepresented Computer Vision Researchers from the Global South

GlobalSouthCV is a half-day workshop at BMVC 2026 dedicated to building a stronger, more inclusive, and globally connected computer vision community.

Researchers and students from the Global South often face structural barriers to participating in the global research ecosystem, including limited access to compute and data, mentorship gaps, geographic distance, visa challenges, and unequal access to research networks. GlobalSouthCV creates a dedicated space to address these challenges while showcasing the research, perspectives, and innovations emerging from these communities.

The workshop will bring together graduate students, postdocs, faculty, and industry researchers, alongside collaborators from the Global North who are committed to equitable and mutually beneficial collaboration.

Topics of Interest

We welcome computer vision research addressing the scientific, practical, and societal challenges faced in Global South contexts. The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Resource-Efficient Vision: lightweight models, compression, pruning, quantization, Edge AI, TinyML, efficient training and inference.
Learning with Limited Data: few-shot, semi-supervised, self-supervised, synthetic data, domain adaptation, robustness, and data-efficient learning.
Societal Applications: healthcare, agriculture, climate, remote sensing, manufacturing, education, disaster response, and social good.
Underrepresented Data & Domains: local datasets, low-resource settings, multilingual and culturally diverse vision, and inclusive benchmarks.
Multimodal & Foundation Models: efficient foundation models, vision-language models, generative AI, and multimodal learning.
Responsible Computer Vision: fairness, bias mitigation, privacy, AI governance, responsible deployment, and community-driven AI.
Real-World Vision: computer vision under constraints of compute, data, energy, connectivity, and infrastructure.
Community & Capacity Building: research ecosystems, mentorship, open-source infrastructure, and equitable international collaboration.

Submission Requirements

We invite original research, emerging ideas, case studies, and community-oriented contributions addressing computer vision research from, for, and with communities in the Global South.

Submissions should follow the BMVC 2026 workshop formatting and submission guidelines. Detailed formatting instructions and templates are available through the BMVC website. [BMVC 2026 LaTeX template]
Papers should clearly describe their contribution, relevance, and potential scientific or societal impact.
Contributions may include technical research, datasets, benchmarks, applications, case studies, or community initiatives.
Paper Length: Submissions should follow the page limits specified by BMVC for workshop papers. Papers must not exceed 14 pages (excluding references). References and any supplementary material are unlimited.
Supplementary information (e.g., appendices, videos, additional results) can be submitted as a single .zip file by the paper deadline. Reviewers are not obligated to read it.

All papers will undergo a double-blind peer-review process. Authors must ensure that submissions are anonymized and comply with the BMVC reviewing policy.

Presentation Information

Accepted contributions will be presented through a combination of posters and selected contributed talks. A subset of contributions will also be invited to participate in the 3MT competition. The final presentation format will depend on the number of accepted contributions and the finalized BMVC schedule.

3-Minute Presentation (3MT) Contest

A subset of papers will be selected to participate in a 3-Minute Presentation (3MT) Contest, following the global 3MT format: one static slide, no transitions or animations, and a strict three-minute limit.

To support participation from the Global South and resource-constrained communities, registration support for the GlobalSouthCV workshop will be provided to a selected number of top-ranked accepted papers, subject to available funding and eligibility.
