Dr. Tushar Shinde is an Assistant Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras Zanzibar, where he leads the Multimedia Intelligence, Data Analysis, and compreSsion (MIDAS) Lab. His research bridges deep learning, machine learning multimedia signal processing, and model compression, driving innovations that enhance the efficiency of AI systems across vision, speech, and healthcare domains.
Dr. Shinde previously served as a Postdoctoral Researcher at Stanford University, USA, where he contributed to cutting-edge projects in dose prediction for radiotherapy planning, medical image compression, and video compression. He received his Ph.D. and M.Tech. degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology Jodhpur in 2020 and 2015, respectively, where his research focused on efficient motion estimation and predictive coding for video compression. His international collaborations include research stints as a Sakura Science Exchange Scholar at Hiroshima University, Japan, and an Exchange Researcher at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, China.
Before joining academia, Dr. Shinde worked as a Senior Engineer at Qualcomm, Hyderabad, developing advanced algorithms to improve video codec efficiency for H.264/HEVC in Qualcomm chipsets. His entrepreneurial interests led him to Entrepreneur First, Hong Kong, where he contributed to deep-tech startup ideation and product conceptualization. Earlier, he began his professional journey as a System Engineer at Infosys, Pune, focusing on full-stack software development.
A recipient of numerous accolades, Dr. Shinde won the 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition at ICIP 2018, Athens, and was selected for the Japan Science and Technology Agency’s Sakura Science Program (2019). He represented India as a Youth Delegate at the World Festival of Youth and Students 2017, Sochi, Russia, and was honored with the Best Student Award at IIT Jodhpur. His research excellence has been recognized with multiple grants, including the Walmart Center of Technical Excellence Project Grant (IIT Madras) and Stanford University Medical Physics Seed Grants.
Dr. Shinde currently serves as a Session Chair at IEEE IPTA 2024 and VCIP 2024 and has co-authored over 25 papers in premier journals and conferences such as Signal Processing: Image Communication, IEEE Multimedia, IEEE ICASSP, ICIP, DSP, PCS, MMSP, and several workshops at CVPR, ICCV, ICML, ICLR, NeurIPS (2024–2025).
His research interests include:
Image/Video Processing/Compression and Quality Metrics: Perceptual quality assessment of AI-generated content, motion estimation, and document image analysis.
Model Compression for Edge AI: Adaptive/mixed-precision quantization, pruning, and coreset selection.
AI and Deep Learning Applications: Vision, speech, and medical imaging.
Applied AI for Societal Impact: Remote sensing, agriculture, and healthcare.
Committed to inclusive AI education, Dr. Shinde actively mentors students across India and Africa, guiding international award-winning projects at ICML, IJCAI, AAAI and ICIP, and spearheads initiatives to empower underrepresented AI researchers.
