Session Description for Engaging Students in Participatory-Action Research as Global Citizenship Education
Engaging Students in Participatory-Action Research as Global Citizenship Education
Over the past two years, I've had the opportunity to develop and lead a course for our 12th grade students called "Critical Global Citizenship." As a key component of the course, students engage in a process of participatory-action research with two community partners in Rwanda. We have summarized this research model with the motto of "Learn From and Act With." From the student research process over the last two years, several school-and-community initiatives have arisen to further global citizenship education at the school. In this session, I will provide an overview description of the student participatory-action research process, and share some insights that may be replicable for other teachers or schools interested in promoting student engagement with community partners and in fostering a critical approach to civic and global citizenship education.
About Nathan Haines
I am a high school social studies teacher at the International School of Kigali in Rwanda. I've been teaching in two different international schools in the East Africa regions for the past 13 years, first in Ethiopia, and now 4 years in Rwanda. I've taught a variety of social studies / humanities subjects including Business, Economics, History, Psychology, Geography and Government. I am also in the final stages of an Ed.D. in Curriculum & Instruction. My research interests relate to experiencial learning, including authentic project-based learning, global citizenship education, and service-learning. I've recently been proud of a course I've developed and led for 12th grade students at my school called Critical Global Citizenship. Part of that course involves students engaging in a participatory-action research process with a couple of community partners in Rwanda.
