In June of 2023, I was graciously given the opportunity to travel to London with the Academy of Notre Dame de Namur. I felt especially thankful for this opportunity because at the time, trip admissions were based on seniority, yet I was able to attend this trip as a freshman. The main focus of this trip was to explore the culture of London as well as learn more about literature and the global richness and influence of the city. On this trip, we traveled to places such as the British Museum, British Library, Warwick Castle, Tate Modern Museum of Art, Shakespeare’s Birthplace, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, University of Oxford, and Stratford-upon-Avon. My favorite part of the trip was when we visited Oxford. I loved the city, the architecture, and the people. I also loved learning about the history of Oxford and exploring the university. We were also able to see some of the famous landmarks, such as Big Ben and the London Eye, and we even saw the show “Six.” This trip was my first time out of the country, and it opened my eyes to the rich culture and history that London has to offer. We were able to learn about the Tudor period during our time at Warwick Castle and learn more about Shakespeare’s writing and what life was like during his time period. Another one of my favorite parts of the trip was just walking around the different cities, comparing and contrasting the people, their behavior, transportation methods, and learning about traditions. This trip was very informative and has since inspired my passion for traveling and learning about other cultures and their histories. Through this experience, I was able to enrich myself in a new culture and immerse myself and experience all it had to offer, allowing my global competence to grow. Overall, my experience on this trip helped me better understand and appreciate the culture and history of the city as well as expand my global perspective.
The summer before my Junior year, I traveled with my school to Peru. I traveled with 6 other students, where we explored Lima and the Amazon Rainforest. On this trip, we stayed with host families and each experienced the day-to-day life of families in Lima, Peru. My host family took me to a soccer game, we traveled to their beach house, did volunteer work in Pamplona, and they showed me some of their favorite activities and places in Lima. In the project below, I compare and contrast the different ways of life around different cities in Peru, addressing disparities and everyday tasks.
