Glen R. Brown is a Professor of Art History at Kansas State University. His research has focused primarily on contemporary and historical ceramics. He served as Associate Head of the Department of Art (2009-14) and Director of Graduate Studies (2014-15). He teaches courses on modern and contemporary art, art theory and criticism, the history of ceramics, and the art of Japan, ancient Mesoamerica, and Africa.
He received a PhD in Art History from Stanford University in 1991; an MA in Art History, Stanford University, 1990; an MA in Art Criticism, The State University of New York, Stony Brook, 1986; and a BA in Art (Painting Emphasis), The Colorado College, 1983. He earned a certificate in Arts Management from The University of Massachusetts--Amherst in 2008; completed postgraduate work at The University of Essex, Colchester, UK 1986-87 and a summer program in Victorian Art and Architecture at the University of Warwick, UK in 1985. He completed a fifth year in art history at the University of Washington 1983-84.
Elected to membership in the International Academy of Ceramics, Geneva, Switzerland (2005), he has written extensively about contemporary and historical ceramics. His most recent book is Jun Kaneko: The Space Between, Zurich: Scheidegger & Spiess, 2021. His articles and reviews have appeared in more than thirty different journals, including Ceramics: Art and Perception; Cerámica; American Ceramics; Ceramics Monthly; American Craft; Sculpture; Ceramics Technical; Neue-Keramik; Temperature; Sculpture (Beijing); Ceramic Review; Kerameiki Techni; The NCECA Journal; Metalsmith; Ornament; and World Sculpture News.
In addition to writing about ceramics he has authored numerous publications on contemporary metalwork, jewelry, and textile art and is a regular contributor to Ornament magazine. He was made an Associate Fellow of the International Quilt Study Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (2004). He is a former Treasurer of the Kansas Artist Craftsmen Association.
