Rie Suzuki
Dr. Suzuki is a Professor of Public Health at the University of Michigan-Flint and has an extensive background in needs assessments, developing theory-based health promotion programs, and program evaluation for adults and aging with physical disabilities.
She graduated from the University of Texas at Austin. Her research includes health disparities and inequities among adults and aging with and without physical disabilities.
As PI on several universities and Federal grants, she laid the groundwork for the impacts of physical environments on health outcomes in Flint, MI. Recently, she has focused on perceived loneliness and AI use. She is currently the advisor of the Eta Sigma Gamma at the Del Phi Chapter of the University of Michigan Flint.
Bonnie McIntosh, BHSc, MBA, MPH, CHES®
Dr. Bonnie McIntosh holds a Doctorate in Health Science degree from George Washington University, an MBA degree from the University of Michigan - Flint, an MPH degree from West Chester University in Pennsylvania, and an Honors BA degree in community health from Brock University in Canada. She is also a Certified Wellness Coach from the Mayo Clinic in Minnesota and a Certified Health Education Specialist from the National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc. in Pennsylvania.
Dr. McIntosh is a Department Chair and Assistant Professor in the School of Nursing and Health Studies at Rochester Christian University. Her research focuses on health and wellness. She also lectures at the University of Michigan. Dr. McIntosh is leading a research partnership between Rochester Christian University and the City of Auburn Hills.
Portia Jackson received a Bachelors in psychology and a Masters in Public Health from Grand Valley State University. She has prior experience as a gender-based violence prevention educator and is now a sexual assault & community engagement specialist at Turning Point, Inc in Mt. Clemens. She is passionate about empowering and advocating survivors and linking them to resources. In her free time, Portia enjoys going on walks, having game nights with her family, and hanging out with her dog, Baxter.
Malynnda Stewart, PhD, BCPA is a leading expert on regulated difficult conversations — integrating trauma-informed mediation, neuroscience-based feedback, and health communication. She is the CEO of Compassionate Navigation, LLC, a board-certified patient advocate, certified conflict mediator, and grief advocate. With over 20 years of experience in health communication, Malynnda works alongside healthcare professionals, universities, and families to navigate the human factors that affect outcomes. She's the creator of the STEADY Framework and BRIDGE Feedback Method—evidence-based tools grounded in neuroscience and trauma-informed care that help providers communicate effectively when the stakes are high, and emotions are running high. She is also the host of the Communication Compass podcast.
Katie Haner is a Certified Health Education Specialist and Community Health Coordinator at District Health Department #10, where she oversees their REACH program. Her passion for cross-sector collaboration, systems change, and expanding opportunities for communities to improve health for their residents has been a key driver throughout her seven years at the Health Department.
Katie earned her Bachelor of Science degree in both Community Health Education and Clinical Exercise Science from Central Michigan University in 2019. She has been a member of GLC-SOPHE since 2018 and previously served on the Executive Board as the Co-Vice President. Outside of her professional work, Katie enjoys being with the people she loves, reading, and spending time outdoors. She resides in West-Central Michigan with her dogs, Samson and Wesley.
Harsna Chahal (she/her/hers) is a second-year medical student at Central Michigan University. She earned her Master's in Public Health from Michigan State University, where she also completed her Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience and Human Biology. As a student leader, Harsna is dedicated to advancing healthcare accessibility by advocating for inclusive health policies at the local, state, and federal levels. She is particularly passionate about promoting equitable and accessible reproductive and sexual health resources through education and policy reform. Harsna is a co-founder of the HEAL Sexual Health Conference, which aims to raise awareness and encourage scientific research on sexual health, along with community engagement and discussion. More specifically, it highlights the work of healthcare, education, and advocacy leaders in our Michigan community and beyond. She also co-founded the East Lansing Free Emergency Contraceptive student organization, which provides free emergency contraceptives and other safer sex products like pregnancy tests to students. Additionally, she has worked to install health vending machines at Michigan State University to increase access to and affordability of health resources, such as naloxone and emergency contraceptives.
Ashley Mascagni, MS, CHES, is the Public Health Services Manager at the Macomb County Health Department, where she leads programs focused on advancing community health through education and strategic initiatives. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Oakland University and her Master of Science in Health Education from the University of Michigan-Flint. She has previously served in multiple executive board and committee roles with GLC-SOPHE and currently serves as Member-at-Large, continuing her commitment to strengthening the public health education workforce.
Outside of her professional work, Ashley enjoys life with her husband, Jon, and their daughter, Peyton. Whether it’s family adventures, movie nights, game nights, or evening walks with their dog, Rosie, she values making meaningful memories together.
Jenny Franz is the Program Supervisor for the Healthy Communities Program at the Macomb County Health Department, where she leads and supports initiatives focused on improving community health and well-being. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Grand Valley State University and her Master of Public Health from Michigan State University, building a strong foundation in both movement science and population health.
Jenny is passionate about implementing evidence-based programs in the community and values seeing real-time results that empower individuals to make informed decisions about their health. Outside of her professional role, she enjoys cooking, traveling, and cheering on her favorite sports teams.
Health Communication, Promotions, and Marketing Coordinator
Shannon is a dedicated Public Health Educator with the Macomb County Health Department. She earned her Master of Public Health degree from Oakland University, where she developed a strong foundation in community health and health promotion and education. Passionate about improving the well-being of others, Shannon brings compassion, expertise, and a commitment to service to work every day.
Outside of her professional role, Shannon enjoys spending quality time with her husband and son. She’s an avid reader and loves scrapbooking, finding joy in capturing memories and expressing her creativity.
Dr. Brew teaches as a Full Professor for the Public Health program at Grand Valley State University and serves as the MPH Program Director. Her Doctoral and double Master degrees are from Columbia University in Education and Health Sciences, respectively. Her doctoral research focused on Adolescent Asthma Health Education in New York City public schools, in collaboration with New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University.
She has worked in health care for nearly 30 years across various settings, including clinical practice, the public school system, geriatric health, fitness, and, currently, higher education. She has over 25 years of higher education teaching experience in both New York City and West Michigan.
Dr. Brew teaches courses in Public Health Promotion and Education emphasis, as well as the Introduction to Public Health course. Teaching online is an area of expertise of Dr. Brew as she has taught, designed curriculum, and trained faculty using these technologies for the past two decades. She is the author of instructor materials for F.A. Davis Publishing for Medical Terminology, Simplified , and a children’s book entitled Healthy Days.
Dr. Brew's current research interests include diversity pipeline programs in health professions, breastfeeding, accessibility, after-school wellness programming, and global health. As co-director, she ran an annual summer health professions camp for 14 years, entitled sHaPe Camp, which has won a 2018 Hometown Health Hero Award for its pipeline and diversity impact in the community, as well as the 2020 national Society for Public Health Education, Clarence E. Pearson Award. Partnered with Lowell Community Wellness, she had co-led 5+ years of after-school wellness camps for elementary students in the Lowell Public School system winning a 2021 Hometown Health Hero Award.
Dr. Brew travels annually with students on global and domestically focused public health service learning trips. She’s travelled to Nairobi, Kenya, Ghana, West Africa, Beijing, China, Tacloban City, Philippines, Manenberg, South Africa, Athens/Ikaria, Greece, and the Nicoya Coast of Costa Rica, and Sardinia, Italy with students on study abroad. Her current research focuses on the five Blue Zones locations, studying centenarians.
Dr. Brew serves in the public health community extensively. She has served as a Past-President for the Michigan Public Health Association (MPHA) and Immediate Past-President for the Great Lakes Chapter of the Society of Public Health Education (GLC-SOPHE), and as an active member of American Public Health Association (APHA) and social co-chair for the PHEHP section, and a national member of the Society of Public Health Education (SOPHE).
Asia Colton, a combined degree student at Grand Valley State University, is pursuing a degree in Allied Health Sciences with a minor in business and a Master’s in Public Health with an emphasis in Health Promotion. She also works as a student worker at the Grand Valley State University CECI Advising Center. Throughout her time at GVSU, she has actively participated in various programs and initiatives, including the REP4 mentorship program, the BIPOC Task Force, the Activation & Accountability Leadership Team, Excel Camp as a counselor, and a student panelist for the CECI Fall Kickoff. Recently, she was a student panelist at the Grand Valley State University Haustein Center Event, See Jane Run: How Women Politicians Matter for Young People. In her free time, she enjoys spending quality time with her family, indulging in matcha lattes, and collecting records.
Jodi Brookins-Fisher, PhD, MCHES, FESG is a professor and former director in the Division of Public Health, School of Health Sciences at Central Michigan University. She currently serves on the SOPHE Advocacy Committee and Advocacy Summit Planning Committee and has been the Advocacy Committee co-chair. She also served as GLC SOPHE national delegate. Dr. Brookins-Fisher has been a President of national Eta Sigma Gamma and is the Chapter Sponsor of Eta Chapter at CMU. She also serves on the steering committee for the nonpartisan public health organization Healthy Democracy Healthy People Michigan. She is a passionate human rights activist and believes strongly in equity for all groups when it comes to accessible and affordable health care. Additionally, she feels that advocacy within the Health Education profession should be at the forefront of our current and future endeavors.
Lauren Bizyk has been Membership Chair for GLC-SOPHE since 2017, and prior to that has served the organization as Member at Large and Secretary. She is involved with recreational soccer as a coach and board member, Science Olympiad as a water quality coach, and the PTO at her children’s school. Lauren worked in health communications, infant mortality prevention, and youth suicide prevention at Oakland County Health Division. She earned her BS in English and Anthropology, as well as her MPH from the University of Michigan. Her graduate studies focused on chronic disease in older adults and people with disabilities. Lauren enjoys being creative through writing, editing, and graphic design.
