GLAZee is an app designed to help ceramic artists with the most unpredictable part of the making process - the GLAZING or surface decoration of their work.
It can be used by potters to plan how to decorate any pottery shape, and uses AR (Augmented Reality) on a mobile device to show what the different surface possibilities are. The artist can upload images of their glaze test tiles and other glazed surfaces. Then, after creating a "bank" of surfaces in their virtual glaze studio, they can either upload an image of an unfinished shape (bisque or greenware), or view it using the camera. The user can then toggle through the surface options, and the app will apply each to the surface like a virtual "skin". The beauty of the AR, is that you can pick up and rotate the piece, or move around it to see different angles. The GLAZee app also has a built in AI feature that learns the ceramicist's preferences and can make suggestions based on past selections, images that have been marked as favourites or samples saved to a virtual "shelf".
GLAZee can also be downloaded by consumers, whether an individual looking for dishes for private use, a merchant looking to carry stock, or a coffee shop looking for personalized items. The consumer version has a search function that helps them to locate styles of ware or sculpture that they like, sort artisans by proximity, name or compare prices. If the potter has set up the glaze studio function, they can allow access to select forms in their collection and the customer can play with the glaze combinations and styles.
The consumer is directly connected to the making/planning process, as well as linked the community of artists as a whole. With built-in messaging, viewing and ordering functions, GLAZee is a great way to connect buyers to small businesses with unique wares, rather than globalized industrial products.
