My name is Anailah and I am currently a Sophomore Biology major with a Black Studies minor at Lincoln University of PA. I decided to start this program after noticing something that stuck with me once I got to college.
During my first year, I noticed the large amount of male students in many of my classes, social settings, and professor standpoints. I even noticed that most of our male dormitories were pushed way past their capacity and came to the expected reality of more male representation than female. By this current school year, the male enrollment has done nothing but increase to the point that one of the dorms had to be abruptly changed from co-ed to all male.
At the same time, I watched girls around me - smart, capable, and full of great potential - step away from college because of obligations at home, financial burdens, or simply lacking the resources and support needed to make it through the rollercoaster called "college". It made me realize how common it is for us women and young girls to fall behind, not because we aren't meant to succeed, but solely because we're often times carrying too much with not enough resources, and too many expectations.
By the grace of God, I attend school on a full ride, I have a strong support system back at home, and I do swell academic wise. However, I felt like I couldn't keep this all to myself. My parents have always instilled in me to be thankful for every opportunity I'm given and to never take it for granted - and with that gratitude comes responsibility. They have also taught me that the best way to show appreciation is to give back and help open doors for others around me. So I created something that givs girls structure, mentorship, and community early in their journey so they can stay confident, stay focused, and know that they deserve a seat at every table they walk into!
Mission Statement:
"Girls Take a Seat" is an empowerment platform and mentorship network created to help young girls and women build confidence, find purpose, and access tools they need to succeed in any space they step into. Through free resources and mentorship, we aim to increase the number of women thriving in higher education, the workforce, and beyond all while creating a village where no girl has to walk alone.
Vision Statement:
Our vision is a future where girls are not only present in the spaces that matter, but recognized, respected, and represented—supported by mentorship, strengthened by community, and prepared to lead with confidence and purpose.
