My Language Level is a self-assessment app based on the NCSSFL-ACTFL Can-Do Statements, designed to help language learners gauge their proficiency across three modes of communication: Interpersonal, Interpretive, and Presentational. By working through a series of checklists that describe what a speaker can typically do at different levels of proficiency, learners can accurately identify their current language level. Early results from an ongoing study suggest that this tool is statistically reliable when compared to traditional formal assessments, offering a convenient and effective way for learners to assess their abilities and receive tailored advice on how to improve.
This app was developed by the enterprise team of the University of Iowa thanks to the Innovation in Teaching with Technology (ITT) Award.
