Growing up in such a cultural setting was Ginaw Bilog, a Hanunoo Mangyan from Mansalay, Mindoro. He took it upon himself to continuously preserve multitudes of ambahan poems recorded, not only on bamboo tubes but also on ancient, dog-eared notebooks given to him by relatives, as he was already well-versed in the knowledge that the ambahan is a key to comprehending the Mangyan soul.
Ginaw Bilog, a poet who was born in 1953, helped keep the Ambahan, or the traditional poetry of the Hanunuo Mangyans, alive in Oriental Mindoro. His most treasured possessions are those he inherited from his father and grandfather, who served as his creative inspiration and mentors. Even today, Ginaw encourages this poetry genre by sharing both old and new ambahans with his fellow Mangyans.
