KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - King Arthur had his holy grail. Witek Nazarewicz has his "magic nuclei." Nazarewicz is a theoretical physicist in search of elements with atoms that are stable yet jam-packed with protons and neutrons in their nuclei. Because of their potential atomic weight, they're called "the super heavies." In his quest for them, Nazarewicz, of Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the University of Tennessee, has taken a major step forward. He may have helped identify a new element to be added to the periodic table: No. 114, for the record, called "ununquadrium" for now.....READ
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Surgically treating Walter "Al" Floyd's tremor caused by Parkinson's disease took the skills of a neurosurgeon using some of medicine's most high-tech tools with the precision of a diamond cutter. It also required the patient's help. Floyd had to be awake while Dr. Richard Boyer inserted a probe deep in his brain. After almost five hours of searching for the optimal response, Boyer knew he'd found it when Floyd extended a steady arm on command. It was a sight the awed patient had waited years to see.....READ
STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Complete with lights and horn and engine sounds, a toy tractor-trailer rig utterly fascinates Peter Lillelid. If the toy is out of reach, however, Peter can't run to get it. Five months after his second birthday and four months after being shot in the head and torso, Peter has recovered from the bullet wounds to find himself with legs that are scarcely able to crawl. But, his doctors predict, Peter will walk again soon......READ
STOCKHOLM, Sweden - Swedish Medical officials said Monday they will deliver on a promise made in Knoxville to provide expert care for Peter Lillelid. Representatives of Sweden's health-care system testified during Peter's custody hearing before a Knox County chancellor in late June. Medical officials said Monday the young boy will get an integrated form of care in Stockholm. Swedish medical official said they now have a responsibility to explain what they will offer Peter, who survived a shooting attack that left his parents and sister dead. Peter and his family were returning home April 6 to Powell from a Jehovah's Witnesses conference in Johnson City when they were carjacked and robbed after stopping at an Interstate 81 rest area. Peter, who turned 2 in March, was shot in the head and through the back. His parents, Vidar, 34, and Delphina, 28, and sister, Tabitha, 6, all died of gunshot wounds.......READ
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - In describing the need to be able to test intelligence without using words, Dr. R. Steve McCallum refers to the familiar notion of America as a melting pot. In describing the nonverbal IQ test McCallum has coauthored, an official with the test's publishing company uses words like "breakthrough" and "an industry standard." McCallum says development of the test was spurred by the fact America's melting pot is bubbling with more diversity than ever, with one notable effect spilling into schools. Dozens of different languages - as many as 200 in Chicago schools - are being spoken by America's schoolchildren.....READ
SOMEWHERE OVER ALBANIA - Controls in his hands, focus on his mind, Jim Quagliana lay there and watched as the "Wild Weasels" got closer. Bumping elbows and knees from media onlookers crowding alongside him in the boom pod were no match for the concentration Quagliana summoned to the task. He was not distracted. He was refueling U.S. Air Force F-16 fighter jets, nicknamed "Wild Weasels." Senior Master Sgt. Quagliana is a refueling boom operator for the Tennessee Air National Guard's 134th Air Refueling Wing. "It's hand-eye coordination big time, and it never gets routine to me," Quagliana said. "The worst thing you can do is take things for granted. Complacency is more an enemy to us than the bad guys. And it's a team effort. It takes two pilots, a navigator and me to make all this work -- and you have to factor in receivers, too." In refueling-speak, receivers are the aircraft that get the fill-ups.On Tuesday's run, those were F-16s based at Spangdalem, Germany.......READ
