Lakes & Reservoirs

It is difficult to maintain a distinction between lakes & reservoirs in Ghana because Lake Volta, the largest artificial lake in the world, is technically a reservoir. It is therefore easier to group them together. It is also common throughout Ghana for the term 'dam' to be used to mean a reservoir, rather than just the barrier which impounds it, e.g. "Work begins on the dredging of Brimsu dam" (Modern Ghana, 7 September 2005), and "va’am ‘farmland’ and mɔgerɛ ‘dam’ in Gurenɛ are perceived as lying on the surface of the earth as a result of their horizontal expansion" (S. A. Atintono, "The Semantics and Grammar of Positional Verbs in Gurene", 2013).
