College Graduates Earn More Money On Average
There is a huge difference between how much money you make with a college degree compared to what you would make without it. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, “the more you learn, the more you earn”. In 2018, having a bachelor’s degree could mean a difference in earnings from $712.00 a week to $1,173.00 a week. Investing money into completing a college degree will put you and your family in a better position for the future.
There are also many jobs that require that you have a college degree before you apply. Looking to obtain a college degree will help you break down barriers on your path to your future career.
Workers With a College Degree Are Less Likely To Face Unemployment
The higher your degree, the lower your chances may be to find yourself unemployed. You do not want to be placed in an uncomfortable decision in the future.
Be Ready to Face the Job Market
Going to college is a new experience, and it is here that you may be treated completely like an adult for the first time in your life. Colleges will contact you with questions or concerns, not your parents/guardians. You are responsible for your own class schedule and making sure you do the work in order to graduate. The only difference is that you will have resources available to provide you with help (as long as you seek them). When you are ready to get into the real world, you will have had time to learn what it means to be an adult, and have experiences to help you navigate many aspects of the world.
Many colleges also have career centers designed to help you with things like prepare your resume, develop proper interview etiquette, and find an internship/future career!
Learn More About Yourself
College offers a variety of experiences for you. You can join an on-campus club revolving around your interests, or learn more about your culture or religion or background. You also have time to reflect on your life and what you would like to do in the future. You can even take a class to help improve yourself. College has many opportunities for you to learn about yourself.
You can also gain experiences in your future career field. Your college experiences may end up leading you to pursue a different career than you originally expected!
Gain New Experiences & New Skills
In college, you will be challenged with many different tasks. You may be asked to do community service for some of your classes. You may take classes where you can learn new skills or help develop existing ones. Being in college also allows you to meet new friends and colleagues!
Network for the Future
Part of the college experience means that you will be exposed to many people with different interests. Some of these people may be alumni who graduated from your college, or professors who may be currently working in your desired fields. College gives you the opportunity to make connections with these people to help you develop opportunities for the future. Colleges also host career fairs where professional organizations and businesses will show up on campus looking to recruit students like you! You can take advantage to learn about different companies and look into joining their teams once you graduate!
Remember: College Is Not For Everyone
We also want to be honest. There are many people, including famous role models, who do just fine without going to college. You can still support yourself and your family without having to get a college degree, and we need people to do those jobs for our communities. Getting a college degree does not guarantee that you will have a job in the future, either. There are many people who have their degrees and still haven't found a job yet. We just want to let you know that obtaining a college degree will make it easier to find that job, and allow you to get further in life. However, you still need to make the decision with your parents on what is best for your future. Start having these conversations now, and think about what is best for you.
