GetResponse Review and Features - One-Stop Email Marketing App

this thorough GetResponse review and pricing plan in 2022, I take a look at a well-known email marketing solution and take a closer look at all of its key pros and cons, features. Is it right for your business ... or should you use an alternative

This guide contains all my first-hand experience with the tool over the last two years, and my opinion on who 100% needs GetResponse and who should stay away.

We are drowning in a sea of tools for email marketing and marketing automation, all of which do the same thing as the others.

However, one of the names that comes up when talking about email marketing software is GetResponse, which has helped me scale my eCom business to six digits and beyond, but it is definitely NOT for everyone.

There is a lot of misinformation out there (I read a review that had the wrong price AND wrong features ... I cover it in here). Make your decision carefully.

In this Honest Review I will cover:

Finally, you should be able to find out if GetResponse is powerful enough to use for your business.

WHAT IS GETRESPONSE?

GetResponse is a marketing platform that unleashes your business potential through email marketing, advanced marketing automation, high-converting landing pages and Auto-funnel, the most kickass marketing tool in the universe.

Over 350,000 customers in almost 200 countries use it daily to:

getresponse-auto-funnels
GetResponse Auto-Funnels

This is one of the only tools that allows you to build a store, market to an email address list, design landing pages based on proven templates, automate your sales funnels and drive traffic on a payment plan.

Pretty cute, right?

Having all this power in one tool was a gift for my business when I was growing up. I could literally do everything in one dashboard, saving myself countless hours (Time is an entrepreneur's most important resource).

GetResponse boasts advanced automation - but is it worth the investment?

With the GetResponse dashboard you can track what is important to you

GetResponse describes itself as a "powerful, simplified tool for automating marketing" for emerging marketers and small and medium-sized businesses. This immediately piqued my interest. A user-friendly tool that can add some much-needed automation to the agency's workflow? Sign me in!

I have tried several other email and marketing tools for my clients, but I have always found them lacking. Sure, they can automate some of my marketing tasks. But if I have to spend a lot of time designing and troubleshooting automations, are they worth the investment? I wanted to see if GetResponse could offer more value than similar top email marketing services.

I considered trying GetResponse's free 30-day trial (which provides access to most features) or signing up for one of the more expensive plans, which include webinars, contact scores, and collaboration tools. But first I wanted to see if GetResponse could meet my basic email and marketing automation needs on the cheapest plan.

I tested GetResponse to find out if the automation platform is as easy to use and powerful as the company claims - and to determine if it provides enough value for money.

GetResponse Pricing and Evaluation?

GetResponse Free Plan $0/mo - no Credit Card Required up to 500 subscribers (not more) Free Plan includes with some beginners features with Unlimited newsletters, 1 landing page, Website Builder, custom domains and signup forms

GetResponse basic plan start at $15/mo for up to 1,000 subscribers (not many at all). Basic plan includes important features such as Unlimited newsletters, Unlimited landing pages, Unlimited Website Builder, Custom domain, Signup forms, Basic segmentation, Email scheduling

I know what you're thinking: Is GetResponse worth the money?

I admit it is NOT CHEAP. That was what struck me in the beginning.

GetResponse is 100% worth the money for serious entrepreneurs. I explain why after I cover the plans.

What are the different pricing plans for GetResponse?

GetResponse-Pricing-and-Evaluation

GetResponse pricing comes in 4 different plans:

All of these plans include the essentials:

However, there are important differences when working your way up. I learned this the hard (READ: expensive) way.

The main differences between the plans (IMPORTANT!)

I signed up for the Basic plan, ready to get wet and quickly realized something ...

THE BASIC PLAN IS NOT TO GROW YOUR BUSINESS

I do not want to say that it is a waste of money, but in my opinion the Basic Plan that GetResponse offers is not worth it. As a beginner, it is optional, but as you grow, it becomes indispensable.

OK, now for one more important thing.

GetResponse prices are rising sharply based on contacts

$49/month is not too bad for the Plus plan when you consider all the features. But that is only for 1000 contacts. It's not exactly #Crushing anything.

GetResponse Plus Pricing Plat

But see what happens when you have a slightly robust mailing list of 5000.

Best Pricing Plan - List Size 5000 in $79/mo

The price increases by more than 50%.

Let's say you are a successful eCom store that needs lots of functionality and has a large contact list of 10,000.

GetResponse Professional Pricing Plan

Who knows what you would pay if you had 100,000 contacts ...

NOTE: GetResponse offers a 30-day free trial of 3 out of 4 plans. And you do not need a credit card. You can create an account for free.

My opinion on GetResponse prices

The prices of GetResponse are so complicated that it is impossible to plan for the long term, but when you make money by handing over your fist from all the fantastic features, you do not care about the price.

Catch-22 of it all is that GetResponse is actually affordable at low levels, but not really worth it at low levels. Capture my operation?

The new 'GetResponse Free' plan

GetResponse has traditionally differed from some of its key competitors' offerings in that, unlike some of them - especially Mailchimp and AWeber - it did not provide a completely free plan.

With the launch of the new GetResponse Free 'free-forever' plan, this situation has changed - you now have the opportunity to use the platform for free indefinitely.

On the plus side, this free version of GetResponse comes with some pretty decent features - the plan allows you to access core features of email marketing, the full range of templates, a website builder and a landing page builder.

But to use this plan, your list must be less than 500 items in size, and your newsletters will include GetResponse branding. Significantly, you will not be able to use any autoresponder or automation features on this plan at all.

But still, the free plan represents a great way to try out the product and get started with email marketing - especially if you have a small list and only want to send newsletters to it occasionally.

You can learn more about the "GetResponse Free" plan here.

How does GetResponse pricing compare to that of its competitors?

As long as you are happy with using one of the entry-level "Basic" plans, GetResponse monthly payments are generally cheaper than those offered by many of your key competitors - especially if you have a large number of email addresses in your database.

GetResponse's starting price is competitive - you can host a database containing up to 1000 email addresses for $15 a month with GetResponse, compared to $29 per month on AWeber or Campaign Monitor. The price of Mailchimp's broadly comparable 'Standard' plan is $51.99 per month when used with 1000 contacts.

As you move up the price ladder, GetResponse generally continues to come in cheaper than all of these products.

A few other things to be aware of on the competitor's price front are:

So the point is that GetResponse stands up well to competitors in the pricing department.

But What about the Features?

GetResponse Review - Key Features

Powerful automation tools for email marketers

With the basic plan, GetResponse offers email marketing tools such as newsletters and autoresponders. It also includes visual automation workflows and conversion funnel necessities like social ads and e-commerce.

For example, you can set them up so that ...

And so on.

Autoresponders-sequence
Autoresponder cycle GetResponse

GetResponse's autoresponder functionality is an important selling point - the product provides some of the most comprehensive autoresponder features available.

You can use GetResponse autoresponder to send either time-based or action-based messages - time-based options include cycles like the example above, and action-based messages can be triggered by user actions or information, such as:

In short, it is packed with automation features. Still, I was curious to find out if the features would be comparable to other professional automation tools I have used.

Performance

GetResponse can help you avoid the spam folder - most of the time

GetResponse offers a spam test feature that allows you to do a spam check at any time during the design process. Although my email address was spam, you'll see a list of issues if your campaign was too spammy. For example, a spam check alerted me that I had too many images and too little text, and encouraged me to change the sender's email address from Gmail to the agency's domain.

GetResponse automatically also shows you the results of the spam check on the main dashboard of the campaign. Since this is the campaign planning screen, this extra alert can help capture last-minute issues.

Interestingly, my test campaigns showed that GetResponse's spam check was not completely accurate. First, the good news: all my Gmail subscribers (about two-thirds of my list) received both of my emails in the main tab, which means my campaigns were not redirected to the Campaigns tab.

Now for the bad news: all my Outlook and Hotmail subscribers (the remaining third of my list) received both of my emails in the spam folder, which means the emails failed the spam.

If your list contains mostly Gmail subscribers, GetResponse can be a great way to avoid the junk folder. However, if you have a lot of subscribers who use other email providers, you may need to do a little extra work to warm up your list. As I learned later in the testing process, GetResponse has some helpful tips for getting into the subscriber's inbox.

GetResponse has an excellent delivery rate

GetResponse claims that the delivery rate is 99%, which is excellent. Still, I was curious if the delivery capability would be so high for my campaigns, especially as a new user.

I was happy to find that the delivery capacity was as strong as promised. The delivery rate was 100% for both of my test campaigns. All my contacts received the emails I sent, and none of the messages popped up.

Although I feel comfortable entrusting GetResponse to deliver my email campaigns, I want to invest more time in making sure I can avoid the spam folder for a wider range of subscribers.

Hundreds of responsive email templates

Some email marketers prefer a platform with a large selection of templates, such as AWeber, which offers 700+ options. Still, when it comes to AWeber vs. GetResponse, I preferred the latter's smaller, yet better designed collection. GetResponse has more than 200 responsive templates, including categories for welcome email, e-commerce and other standard topics.

GetResponse-Email-Templates
GetResponse Email Templates

In addition to templates and blank layouts, GetResponse lets you save past campaigns as templates for future use. I found all the options easy to customize using GetResponse's drag-and-drop editor.

GetResponse-Email-Editor
GetResponse Email Editor

When you create an email on a laptop, it's easy to forget that it has to look good on a variety of devices. GetResponse lets you check previews side by side, so you can make sure your emails get the message across on both desktop and mobile devices.

Visual Marketing Automations

One of the best parts of a marketing suite is that automation features can put daily tasks on autopilot.

GetResponse Marketing Automation Builder is one of the most comprehensive tools available to marketers looking to create simple and advanced automation.

The drag-and-drop marketing automation builder lets you create visual workflows to see the automation and customize each step as you go. You can create automation events based on the behavior of the contacts and then trigger actions based on selected conditions.

For example, if you want a particular email to be sent only if a contact clicks on a link in an email, all you have to do is create that sequence and condition using the visual automation builder:

GetReponse-Marketing-Automation-Workflow-Builder
GetReponse Marketing Automation Workflow Builder

With the workflow, you can also add a “trigger” into the workflow for events like:

I was glad I did not have to spend time creating automations from scratch. They are organized into categories so you can easily find engagement workflows to reconnect with lost subscribers, promotional campaigns to share product launches, abandoned cart automations to encourage completed checkouts, and many more options.

I liked GetResponse's marketing automation workflow maps, which are easy to follow for each automation. The editor makes it very easy to change workflows. By clicking on any item, you can customize the actions or change the conditions to get the automation just right.

For a quick visual overview of how all of this works, take a look at GetResponse's video review of the marketing automation features below.

Thousands of app integrations

With app integrations, you can get even more functionality out of your email service provider. GetResponse gives you direct links to social media apps like Facebook, CRM apps like Salesforce, and e-commerce apps like Shopify.

In total, GetResponse has about 30 integrations, which is much less than most platforms. However, you can connect GetResponse to Zapier, which adds around 2,000 integrations to the total count. If you do not mind adding the extra Zapier step, you can connect GetResponse to almost any other software platform.

The GetResponse API offers even more integration options, as it allows connections to a wider range of apps. You can get your API key by navigating to the integration panel and clicking API.

Unlimited landing pages

GetResponse has a tool where you can build custom pages or use over 180 different templates to create the perfect landing page.

GetResponse-Landing-Page-Templates

Like the drag-and-drop tool for email, GetResponse landing page builder is all about usability. You can create landing pages that are mobile responsive and professional without any coding experience.

And if you want to add code? Using the editor, you can add custom code using HTML, CSS or Javascript. If you want to add or embed external elements, all you need to do is make a quick cut and paste.

And to make the page appear, the tool has a built-in image editing program that allows you to add your own images. You can also import images directly from Shutterstock or even add engaging Giphy GIFs to your landing page.

Landing-Page-Creator-GetResponse

Once you're happy with what your landing page looks like, you can launch it immediately and start gathering potential customers who will be filtered right into your email lists.

With the landing page creator, you can:

Many marketers compare GetResponse vs. MailChimp. I have tried both, and I thought GetResponse's pages were better designed and easier to customize. I counted well over 100 landing page templates, including handy categories for campaigns, downloads, webinars, and more.

Even with limited design skills, I found GetResponse's landing page editor page easy to figure out. It allows you to add advanced options to landing pages, such as forms, PayPal buttons, and countdown timers. You can create unlimited landing pages, even on the cheapest plan.

Built-in browser alerts

Web push notifications can be an important part of a funnel, as they ask site visitors to select browser alerts. You can configure these to notify customers about new products, limited sales and other business news.

Most platforms only offer push notifications as a third-party integration, but GetResponse includes them as a built-in feature. I found it easy to set up on my site, and actions like managing permissions and sending alerts were a breeze.

Conversion funnels made for you

Conversion funnels can be daunting to build, but GetResponse has simplified this once-complicated process.

The conversion funnel feature in GetResponse makes it super easy for you to build successful conversion funnels, even if you've never done it before. The funnels are pre-designed scenarios for what a typical conversion might look like.

For example, if you're trying to sell a course, the conversion path might look like this:

GetResponse-Conversion-Funnel-Journey
GetResponse Conversion Funnel Journey

With the conversion funnel function, each step of this conversion is automatically organized into steps you can visualize:

GetResponse-Conversion-Funnel
GetResponse Conversion Funnel

Not only can you see how successful each step of your conversion path is, but you can also track how profitable your efforts are. You can see how many potential customers come into your funnel, and finally how many became paying customers.

Best of all? All the tools needed to build the conversion funnel are already part of GetResponse including options for sales and lead generation. This feature saves you time while making the results much easier to track.

It was easy to set up a simple lead magnet funnel that included a landing page, a download page, an email to potential customers and optional Facebook ads. The funnel visualization helps you understand how potential customers move from one step to the next, and the built-in analysis is great for monitoring your results.

Webinars Funnels

You can start an interactive webinar right from the GetResponse dashboard.

The functionality of the webinar software allows you to create webinars that have a custom webinar URL, registration forms and built-in polls and surveys:

Webinar-software-getresponse
Webinars Software

Because the webinars link back to GetResponse, every lead you gather will automatically be added to your email lists and nurtured. If you start a webinar with GetResponse, you will have access to key features such as:

However, what makes GetResponse's webinar tools stand out is that it has a pre-built advertising machine that you can use to sell things from your webinars. The machine has functions such as:

Using these features, you can sell products, services, and courses directly from your webinars.

Segmentation

We think our suite of lead generation tools makes it easy to nurture contacts and convert them into paying customers.

How? By using segmentation to create highly targeted, personalized emails that make your contacts feel like you're talking to them 1-on-1.

It all starts with our forms, which we have created to collect the most useful data from contacts when they sign up via a newsletter or a landing page.

Once they're on your contact list, you can assign tags to them based on their behavior, and send targeted emails to specific groups.

What sets GetResponse apart is that it automatically picks the most engaged contacts from your list so you can target them.

We call this an Engagement Score. Using real-time data, GetResponse gives each contact on your list a score based on a 5-point scale:

The engagement points will then appear on your contact list, so you can target your most engaged contacts and increase your chances of making them paying customers.

An example of contacts with varying engagement scores

GDPR Compliance

When GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) laws were introduced, email marketing became a little more complicated. The GDPR specifies stricter rules on what constitutes consent to receive e-newsletters (and requirements for how consent is logged).

GetResponse will be praised for providing users with clear information about what their GDPR responsibilities are, along with special GDPR fields that make it easier to log consent and comply with regulations.

In addition, you can enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for GetResponse login. This ensures that a user is only given access after presenting two or more information - such as a password and a code generated by an authentication app for smartphones.

Given that data security is a key aspect of the GDPR, this is a good feature to have in place.

On the downside, GetResponse's landing page feature is not GDPR compliant if you plan to use a Facebook pixel or other third-party cookie in connection with it - so there is definitely room for improvement here.

GetResponse’s website builder

The latest addition to GetResponse's feature set is a website builder.

This allows you to create a website in the GetResponse interface and link it to a domain you own (you can also, if you wish, purchase your domain through GetResponse).

The templates for the website builder are pretty good - but as it is now, the tool is a pretty basic affair, which only allows you to create simple, static pages.

You can add GetResponse forms very easily to these, which is useful, but I could not find an obvious way to add products I had created in GetResponse on a test site that I put together with the developer.

So if you are hoping to build an online store with this tool, you will be a little disappointed at the moment. On the plus side, GetResponse says full e-commerce functionality is on the way.

However, as a means of creating a simple brochure website, it will work quite well for some.

Website-Builder-Example-Getresponse

One thing to note about GetResponse's site builder is that the sites it creates are not very fast, or particularly compatible with Google's new Core Web Vital site speed and stability standards.

Ease of use

GetResponse is user-friendly, even for beginners in email marketing

I was happy to discover that the platform even on my first GetResponse login was easy to figure out. From email marketing to conversion funnels, you can access all the services using the menu at the top left. You can also quickly access subscriber lists and reports by clicking in the middle of the top menu bar.

It took me less than an hour to upload my contacts and create my first campaign. Although advanced features such as automation can be more complicated to learn, GetResponse makes it easy.

When you first use advanced tools such as automation, the interface guides you to video tutorials to speed up the learning process. And when you set up your first conversion funnel, an animated GIF will guide you to the next step so you don't get lost. You will also find that almost all parts of the dashboard connect to useful guides.

Customizable Dashboard

You can easily adjust the main dashboard to meet your needs. Because the dashboard is made of modules, you can add, remove or rearrange them to place the most important information in front and in the middle. You can even add widgets to monitor list growth, track conversion funnels, or give you quick access to daily tasks.

Easy Partial testing

GetResponse's A/B testing feature was easy to use - when I first realized that there are separate interfaces for standard email and shared testing. I was able to share the test subject lines, but I could not find an alternative to try different sender names or email content. Ideally, I want more test options so I can try out more combinations, but I was impressed that split testing was included in the cheapest plan at all.

It was super easy to choose an audience size and time frame. You can choose to automatically send the winner message to the rest of the list or review the A / B test results first.

Compatibility with over Two Dozen Languages

The GetResponse platform is currently available in 26 languages:

Analytics & Reporting

Contrary to some reviews, GetResponse reports are comprehensive

Before testing this platform, I want to read more than one GetResponse review indicating that the analyzes were inadequate. However, I found GetResponse reporting options better than similar email marketing services. In addition to standard email, subscriber and automation numbers, the reporting dashboard offers customization and targeting tools.

GetResponse Reports Can Help You Make Data-Driven Decisions

GetResponse lets you customize the reporting panel so you can compare two versions of an email. With this feature, you can quickly see which version of the subtest generated better results to identify the best times and topics for your audience.

GetResponse reports provide good customization

Basic GetResponse reports have all the metrics you expect, such as open prices, clickthrough rates, social shares, and delivery capability. Sometimes you may want more specific metrics, such as clicks on specific web pages or site purchases. GetResponse allows you to add custom metrics through the goal setting option. After you add a goal, it will appear in reports for that account.

GetResponse reports are good for teams

GetResponse lets you schedule both subscriber and campaign reports so you can share results with customers or colleagues. You can also customize the timing of your reports and automatically send them to as many stakeholders as needed. But while GetResponse is great for sharing results, it's also worth noting that you can only have more users if you upgrade to the Plus plan or later - more on that later.

Support

GetResponse's Live Chat makes up for its lack of telephone support

I was a little disappointed to find that GetResponse does not have telephone support. However, GetResponse's live chat exceeded my expectations - even when I needed help at

The first time I used 24/7 live chat support was when I realized that my first campaign went out with the wrong sender name. A support specialist joined my chat almost immediately and answered my question in less than three minutes. The answer was easy to follow and solved my problem.

Then I sent the support team for help with the delivery capability. I wanted to know if they could recommend ways to avoid the campaign tab or the spam folder. It took about 20 hours to receive an email back, but the support team had some helpful tips to resolve the issue. Although I was happy with the resolution, I would probably start a live chat for faster response.

I used the live chat option another time to ask to upload contacts. I was wondering if I could upload a Word document with subscribers instead of converting it to a CSV file. It took about five minutes to contact a support specialist and about two minutes to get an answer. I was happy to hear that I could upload a TXT file with email addresses, which would save me time.

I was happy with the convenient live chat feature, and I never had to search the FAQ for more complete answers.

GetResponse also allows you to track all support tickets so you do not get unresolved issues.

GetResponse Review: CONCLUSION

GetResponse is a powerful yet user-friendly automation platform with email marketing, advanced conversion funnels and more than 2000 Zapier integrations. The platform offers an impressive list of features, and although the learning curve is not steep, live chat support is always available when you need it, and there is a 30-day free trial to get started.

Although I prefer a free plan for small lists, I would definitely recommend GetResponse to emerging marketers and small or medium sized businesses.
