I am Germán Dugarte Peña, Ph.D., an academic leader, researcher, and educator with over 15 years of experience in higher education across Spain, Latin America, Norway, and the United States. I currently serve as Dean of Faculty and Assistant Director at IES Abroad Madrid, where I oversee a team of more than 80 faculty, 30 staff, and 500 students per semester across programs in Language & Area Studies, Business/Economics/Social Sciences, and Engineering/Math/Science.
Previously, I was an Associate Professor at Universidad Francisco de Vitoria and an Assistant Professor at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, where I taught and conducted research in software engineering, digital transformation, modeling & simulation, and systems thinking. I have also been a Visiting Scholar at Carnegie Mellon University (2017, 2019) and Østfold University College, Norway (2022–2023).
My research focuses on software engineering, organizational strategy, digital transformation, knowledge management, and system dynamics. I have published more than 20 peer-reviewed journal articles and participated in internationally funded projects (NSF, ITEA3, IRSST, IBM, among others).
Alongside my administrative and research responsibilities, I remain passionate about teaching and mentoring, having taught 24 different courses and supervised theses in applied AI, epidemiological modeling, and systems simulation. I also hold ANECA accreditations, a Sexenio de investigación (six years of recognized research), and a Quinquenio de docencia (five years of recognized teaching).
My mission as an educator and academic leader is to foster environments where faculty thrive, students are challenged, and institutions grow through innovation, collaboration, and academic excellence.
