I am a research officer in the ARC funded Special Research Initiative 'Securing Antarctica's Environmental Future', in the Science Implemention Hub of the UOW Node.
I recieved my Bachelor of Science (Biology, Hons I) from the University of Wollongong. My honours research investigated how timber harvest and frequent prescribed burning altered the ingrowth, growth and mortality of a eucalypt forest in South East Australia, over two decades.
I have extensive research support experience, serving as a research officer in the Global Challenges Program at UOW, within the theme of 'Sustaining Coastal and Marine Zones'. I also have experience as a research assistant in ecology, with projects focusing on invasive flora biology, biodiversity monitoring and forest ecology.
I'm passionate about sharing science with others and communicating the urgency of climate change to as broad an audience as I can.

October 2023
I was a guest on the first episode of Early Start's Cli-Fi for Kids podcast, hosted by A/Prof Pauline Jones. It brought together a scientist (me), an educator (Josef English) and a parent (Marianne Peso) to discuss award-winning Australian book "ICEBERG" by Claire Saxby and Jess Racklyeft. This episode was launched during Global Climate Change Week 2023.
Enhancing children's understanding of Antarctica, this book follows an iceberg calving off, bobbing around the continent, experiencing different wildlife across the seasons.
October 2023
I attended the 'Driving Gender Equity in STEM: From Local to National Action' workshop, delivering a project pitch to participants.
This collaborative workshop was full of passionate, knowledgable people. This was one of the best organised and facilitated workshops I've ever been to, where I gained new collaborators all over the country to work on delivering better outcomes for women and girls in STEM through existing frameworks.
September 2023
The EmpowerHER STEM Summit is a school holiday program for girls in years 9 - 11 to ignite their passion for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM)!
I was very lucky to be asked on board as a panelist showcasing a variety of careers available to our future STEM-inists, as an authentic, relatable role model of success in science.
May 2023
At the inaugural SAEF conference in Adelaide this month I hosted a workshop for early career researchers on how to maximise their social media networks to leverage career success. This included practical tips on how to build a profile as well as getting the most out of conferences and sharing their own research to a wider audience. This was such a fun session for me, making use of my love for science communication and my innate ability to build networks of likeminded people.
April 2023
I was a guest on 3RRR radio's Einstein-a-Go-Go show for Easter Sunday, hosted by Dr Shane AOM. We chatted about Antarctica, my non-traditional path as a scientist, women in STEM and being selected for #TeamHB8
March 2023
I've been selected to be a part of the ground breaking leadership initiative Homeward Bound. This twelve month leadership journey culminates in an intensive trip to the Antarctic Peninsula, where the participants from 25 countries will meet for the first time and dive deep into science, strategy and collaborating to create a more sustainable future for our planet.
I'm fundraising to support my place in Homeward Bound 8, check out my fundraisers here
2023
The UOW Media Team worked up a lovely media release about my role as an ambassador for the Antarctic Science Foundation, which lead to interviews for local radio station, ABC Illawarra, and local newspaper, Illawarra Mercury.
My role as an Ambassador is one I'm very proud of, allowing me to pour my passion for Antarctic conservation into a foundation that supporters brilliant researchers who face many logistical and environmental challenges in studying the polar regions.
January 2023
I was a guest on 3RRR radio's Einstein-a-Go-Go show, which explores the wonders of science and its impact on the world. Hosted by Dr Shane, I chatted about my mossy research with SAEF, being an Ambassador for the Antarctic Science Foundation and what it's like to fly over Antarctica.
December 2022
The Antarctic Science Foundation is the only Australian-based charity whose supporters focus their generosity specifically on critical Antarctic research. As an ambassador, I was able to join a special New Year's Eve flight from Sydney, over south east Antarctica and back, bringing attention to the importance of future-focused scientific research.
I had so much fun ringing in the New Year over the Transantarctic Mountains, with conversations about climate, ozone, Antarctic Treaty and biodiversity swirling around the cabin.
December 2022
The UOW VC addressed a group of high achieving HSC-finishers who had been offered scholarships at UOW for 2023.
I spoke as an alumna of UOW about my experience of undergraduate study and the opportunities I've had in my career so far thanks to the support of my community.
November 2022
The Ecological Society of Australia and Society for Conservation Biology Oceania held its first face-to-face conference since 2019, with Wollongong as the host city for the theme of 'reconnecting'.
My talk was on how climate change and ozone depletion are affecting the moss beds in East Antarctica, presented to a full house!
It was so reinvigorating to talk about the research coming out of my lab. As always, ESA facilitated some great discussions, ideas, introductions and reunions.
November 2022
I was a panelist on for The Brand Education's Advanced Social Media workshop, talking about my content strategy and goals around using Twitter to share my research.
This was a really rich and interesting discussion, facilitated by Zainab Fayaz and shared with Dist. Prof. Antoine van Oijen, as it came just as Twitter had been taken over by El*n M*sk and many researchers were migrating to Mastodon.
October 2022
The theme of Open Access Week 2022 was 'Open for Climate Justice'. In this podcast episode, hosted by Samantha Hutchinson and Clare Job from the UOW Library, we explored how our research practices intersect with science communication, citizen science and open access.
Guests on this episode in PhD candidate Teaniel Mifsud, Distinguished Professor Sharon Robinson and myself.
October 2022
Organised by Jeff Kelleway, researchers working on climate related research at UOW participated in a walk around campus to showcase labs, equipment, techniques and science communication pieces.
The walk across campus ended at the UOW gallery, where the Antarctic Futures exhibition was hosted, speaking about the importance of engaging the public in dialogue about biodiversity conservation and climate action.
August 2022
I coordinated the opening night of the Antarctic Futures exhibition and had a lovely write up from the UOW media team about it. Antarctic Futures was supported by Inspiring Australia, the UOW Early Start Program, the Global Challenges Program, the Art Collection and Gallery team and the UOW Centre for Sustainable Ecosystem Solutions.
