John Spofford, one of Rowley’s original settlers, arrived from England in 1638 with Rev. Ezekiel Rogers. After three decades of relative safety and community life there, he and his wife—together with their nine children—moved six miles west. Spofford and his family became Georgetown’s first permanent settlers.
