Eligibility

  • 60 credits by the start of the internship

  • Minimum of 2.5 GPA

  • No Code of Conduct infractions

  • SPRING: Ability to register for a minimum of 6 credits for this applied sustainability experience. Three credit minimum internship and a three-credit course that meets once per week.

  • SUMMER: Ability to register for a minimum of a three credit internship and work 37.5 hours per week, 320 hours total for almost 9 weeks.

  • Reliable personal transportation to the internship site in Georgetown County.

SUMMER 2023 PAID INTERNSHIPS

SPRING OPPORTUNITIES

SPRING Internships are paid $2,500 from January through May. Students work a minimum of 15-20 hours per week. If students choose and it is approved by their advisors, they may elect to work more hours for more internship credits. Students will have to arrange a work schedule with employers prior to the start date. Students will receive 3-9 credits of internship (depending on the hours you choose to work). In addition, a three-credit class on the United Nations sustainable development goals and their application to your internship on Mondays 4-6pm in Georgetown is required. Personal transportation is required.

SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES

SUMMER Internships are paid $4,000 from May through end of July/August. Students work 37.5 hours per week. Students will have to arrange a work schedule with employers prior to the start date. Students are required to register for 3 credits, but may receive up to 12 credits (depending on the hours you choose to work and advisor approval). The three-credit class on the United Nations sustainable development goals and their application to your internship in Georgetown is required. Personal transportation is required.


City of Georgetown: Police Department

The City of Georgetown is the third oldest city in SC, and one of the oldest in the United States. It was recently voted the Best Small Coastal Town. The City is seeking a criminal justice / criminology, intelligence and national security, political science, or sociology major, or other relevant major to gain experience in the police force and their work. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30-5pm. Duties include:

· Assist front desk personnel with the reception area, answer telephones, and greet the public.

· Assist with coding, archiving, filing, and shredding reports.

· Assist record clerks with updating our records repository retention schedule.

· Review and update field training and new hire orientation processes

· Data entry related to Georgetown Police Department State accreditation

· Data entry related to Georgetown Police Department records operating platform (SOMA)

Coastal Conservation League, Environmental Research

From sandy beaches and salt marshes to freshwater swamps and farmland, the Coastal Conservation League has been finding solutions to rapid growth and development and impacts from a changing climate on the South Carolina coastal plain since 1989. We work from our headquarters in Charleston, our legislative office in Columbia, our South Coast office in Beaufort, which covers Beaufort, Jasper, Colleton, and Hampton counties, our North Coast office, which works across Georgetown, Horry, Marion, Williamsburg, and Florence counties, and our local food hub, GrowFood Carolina.

This year, we are looking to ramp up our North Coast office work on improving wildlife habitat and green space connectivity through various pathways: wetland buffers, green belt programs, and conservation easements. These efforts of establishing additional green space and conservation lands will build a more resilient North Coast in the face of a changing climate.

This summer, the Coastal Conservation League will hire an intern to research gaps in the current landscape that could contribute to more connectivity of habitats through initiatives such as wetland buffers, publicly funded land conservation programs, and private land conservation easements. Desired experience, but not required, would include the ability to use mapping software such as ArcGIS, QGIS, and/or Google Earth. The intern will also conduct literature reviews and research existing ordinances across the state, county, and coast to design a campaign for publicly funded land programs and solutions for the North Coast. Work might consist of drafting ordinances, surveying community members, collaborating with partner organizations and governmental staff, presenting to community groups, creating talking points and handouts, and generating letters to the editor and website content.


The Coastal Observer Newspaper: Journalism and Communications

The Coastal Observer spring intern will work with our news staff. The work will involve gathering information through direct contact with sources and putting the information in written form that can either be used directly in the newspaper or in collaboration with the work of other writers. It will require organization, good skills in oral and written communication and plenty of curiosity. The information gathering may also require some work in the field and working with our physical and digital archives.

Department of the Planning and Code Enforcement, Georgetown County: Research, GIS, Policy, Writing

The Georgetown County Planning Department works to create viable solutions for the future growth and development of Georgetown County. This internship will research, examine and update sections of the County zoning ordinance. The position will assist with reviews and updates to elements of the Comprehensive Plan as well as assist with outreach and community education efforts. Excellent research, writing, spreadsheet analysis, and GIS skills are needed. Attendance at some public meetings may be required.


Georgetown County Office of Economic Development and Administration

The Georgetown County Economic Development Office is seeking an intern to assist with conducting research, reviewing and consolidating information found during research activities and providing support during implementation of the programs of the department. Georgetown County Environmental Services Intern

The Environmental Services Intern will be tasked with responsibilities in a wide range of disciplines. The Office of Parks and Recreation: Stables Tennis Center and Program Development, Georgetown County

Looking for qualified student/candidate to continue the good work for our Georgetown County Outreach Programs. We have three facilities that we offer tennis programs: East Bay Park, Choppee Regional Recreational Center and Andrews Regional Recreation Center.

A background in tennis is a big advantage, but we can teach the candidate the basic methods for learning and teaching the sport of tennis. Setting up programs, marketing, administering the programs, attaining and training volunteers and submitting a follow up SWOT analysis are all part of the weekly duties.

Schedule is weekly meetings with the county tennis professional, followed by various training sessions and programming throughout Georgetown County. Tidelands Health Community Care: Community Health Resources

DEPARTMENT BACKGROUND

Tidelands Health Community Health Resources Department has 5 units comprised of various of services and programs. In addition, both nurses and care coordinators work collaboratively to provide wholistic case management to the uninsured and underinsured in Georgetown County, as well as those in need of palliative care services. The department also houses breast health initiatives to increase routine mammograms and preventive programming for women. Support Services oversees conducting, monitoring, and reporting on our Community Health Needs Assessment and all data/metrics for the department. Our clinical team provides support to all units related to nursing needs, as well as housing our OB Care Coordination Program and high-risk patient care management. Community Wellness provides community events, health fairs, industry partnerships, and community conversations to promote health and wellness in the community. LiveWell Georgetown County and Triple P Georgetown are both grant initiatives funded by the Duke Endowment to promote community coalitions and community organization around positive parenting and addressing obesity, diabetes, and chronic conditions in Georgetown County. Community Health Resources is actively involved in all efforts by the health system to prevent, educate, and provide recovery during the COVID 19 pandemic. We have and can provide testing, vaccination, education, outreach, transportation, call line support, scheduling, etc. to assist our community.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

The role of the intern is to provide assistance with programming at Tidelands Health, with an emphasis on the areas of focus occurring concurrent with student’s field seminar course work. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the Community Health Resources departmental programs and units listed above. This internship will include a variety of components, including some examples listed below.

• Assisting with the research, implementation, data collection, and evaluation of 2022 Community Health Needs Assessment

The Waccamaw Regional Council of Governments: Regional Planning

The intern for the Waccamaw COG will be working on hazard mitigation and water quality planning projects to support the resilience of the region. The intern will provide research assistance to inform updates to the Williamsburg County Hazard Mitigation Plan and the Waccamaw Region Section 208 Water Quality Management Plan. Other responsibilities may include coordinating public input and community meetings, tracking outreach to local governments, and drafting reports and updating plans, as well as assisting with records management.
