The conference is being organised and sponsored by the Surrey Space Centre, which is part of the School of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Surrey. Founded in 1979, the Centre has played a leading role in the development of small satellite technology and has contributed to numerous space missions in collaboration with partners like the European Space Agency, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, etc.
This expertise has made the University of Surrey the first, and so far only, university in the UK to have full end-to-end capability in small satellite development, ranging from orbital mechanics and spacecraft design to mission operations, like Earth observation, on-board data handling, or even lunar habitat.
The School of Mathematics and Physics at the University of Surrey brings together research and teaching across pure and applied mathematics, statistics, theoretical physics and experimental physics. Its research spans areas including nonlinear analysis and dynamical systems, quantum and atomic physics, astrophysics, space science, and data-driven modelling.
The wider School of Mathematics and Physics (beyond the Surrey Space Centre) has been supporting and helping to organise Geometry Space Surrey, notably through collaboration with Profs David J.B. Lloyd and Thomas J. Bridges, and we are very grateful for their support and expertise in developing the programme.
The STRUCTURES Cluster of Excellence was established in 2019 at the University of Heidelberg, as part of Germany’s Excellence Strategy. It brings together mathematics, physics and computer science to study how structure and complexity emerge in natural and data-driven systems.
The cluster participates in outreach, through its STRUCTURES blog for example, and puts an emphasis on supporting early career researchers, through mentoring, conference organisation, travel support, as well as through its Young Researchers Convent (YRC), which organises its own events.
We are very grateful for the enthusiasm and support they have brought to this workshop.
The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications is a professional society comprising over 5,000 mathematicians from all sectors. It supports the mathematical community through a programme of specialist conferences, workshops and lectures held throughout the year, but also through peer-reviewed journals, outreach magazines, and awards recognising excellence and impact in mathematics and its applications.
We are very grateful for their trust and support.
