Our Department

History of the Department

Natural Resources are the backbone of the country. To cope up with the needs of the resources for the industrial development, understanding the natural hazards to safeguard the mankind and also the environment, this department of geology was started by Founder Secretary Kulapathi Shri. A. P. C. Veerabahu in 1964.

Under Graduate

Mr. T. M. Ganesan was the first member on the staff of this Department. Dr. K. Kadirvelu gave the much needed fillip to the department. During his tenure, Mr. R.Muthukrishnan, Mr. Seshachalam and Mr. Ramachandran have collaborated effectively with Dr. K. Kadirvelu and made Geology a much sought-after academic discipline.

Post Graduate

Geology was offered as a core subject at the undergraduate level up to 1980. Our founder Secretary took steps to elevate the department into a Post Graduate Department of Geology. In 1981 this expansion could accommodate more number of teaching posts. Mr. V. Radhakrishnan, Mr. J. Mathan Jeyapal, Mr. R. Chellasamy, Mr. R. Thirugnana Sambandam, Mr. N. Chandrasekar, Mr. G. Manimaran, Mr. P. Venktaraman, and Mr. A. V. Udayana Pillai joined the faculty in 1980’s. Mr. P. Sivasubramanian joined in the year 1997.

Research Centre

Spurred by the youthful enthusiasm of the faculty, steps were taken by the Management and the department was recognized as the Research Centre in 1991.
