Tree Plantation Programme at Kheribari Village and Malda College Campus as a part of College Outreach Programme, July 14-21, 2021
We depend heavily on forests for our survival. In order to properly maintain the ecological balance, 33% of the total area of a region needs to be forested. According to the data of 2019, the total forest area in India is 612249 sq. km which is 21.7% of the total geographical area and according to the data of 2017, the total forest area in West Bengal is 11.79 sq. km which is 13.38% of the total geographical area. Therefore, mass tree planting programs in the state and across the country are extremely necessary. With this in mind, a tree planting program during the Aranya Saptaha (July 14-21, 2021) has been undertaken this year by the Department of Geography Malda College in collaboration with NCC and NSS, Malda College Unit. In addition to the college campus, trees have been planted at Kheribari village which is adopted by the college. Villagers have been made aware of the need to plant trees through an interactive session with them. At the end of the discussion, the villagers pledged to save every tree. The Forest Department, West Bengal Government has provided the saplings.
