Geography as a subject of learning was introduced in this college in 1986 in degree level (General course) and Honours course of study was started in the year 1996. Possibly this is the first department in the state as well as in the country where Geography is taught in the evening section. Continuous good results in BA/BSc. Final examinations, good coordination with college authority and other two- geography sister departments of Vidyasagar College and Vidyasagar College for women are special characteristics of this department. Over the years, this department has been providing quality teaching for students coming from our locality as well as from different distant districts of West Bengal. Generally, our input of students consists of students coming from families without adequate financial resources and a good number of students are forced to be engaged in earning livelihood for themselves and for the families. Many of the students are not fortunate enough to have performed well in the qualifying examinations (H.S. level) in spite of being dedicated, sincere and eager to pursue higher studies. With these students as inputs, we, in spite of very limited time span (during 1986-87 to 2013-14) and teaching resources and academic setup (very short span of college hour, common departmental laboratory and class rooms with the Vidyasagar college and Vidyasagar college for women, very poor teacher-student ratio etc.) have so long tried to improve the quality of teaching as well as students academic standing.
