A JOURNEY THROUGH ADVERSITY……………

OUR VOYAGE WAS BEGAN WITH AN UNFAVOURABLE WIND……………………

IT WAS DIFFICULT TO BREAK THE COMMON CONCEPT –DEPARTMENTS OF EVENING COLLEGES ARE NO MATCH TO THEIR DAY COLLEGE COUNTERPARTS.

OUR PATH INVOLVED DIFFICULTIES.

BUT BEING STEADY IN OUR GOAL, WE CONTINUED OUR PURSUIT AGAINST ALL ODDS.

INSPITE OF LIMITED TIME SPAN, SHORTAGE OF SPACE AND MEDIOCRE EXPEDITIONISTS(STUDENTS) WE CARRIED ON OUR JOURNEY……………….

THE PROBLEMS THAT LIE IN OUR WAY………

● 1. WE HAVE TO SHARE OUR CLASSROOMS AND LABORATORY WITH OUR SISTER COLLEGES,
● 2. MEDIOCRE STUDENTS WITH MEAGER FINANCIAL AND CHALLENGING BACKGROUND,
●3. IT BECOMES A GREAT ORDEAL TO COMPLETE THE PRACTICAL AND THEORETICAL CLASSES IN A LIMITED TIME SPAN ,
● 4. SCARCITY OF TEACHERS.

RAY OF HOPE COME THROUGH SUSTENANCE AGAINST THE CYCLOPEAN CYCLONE ……

INSPITE OF TOO MANY PROBLEMS ………………………

●DEDICATED MOTIVATION TO ENHANCE THE QUALITY IN THE WAY OF COMPLETION OF SYLLABUS,

● CLASS TESTS, PRE-FINAL TEST ,

● PERSONAL ENCOURAGEMENT,

● PARENT-TEACHER MEET,

● TUTORIAL AND REMEDIAL CLASSES

WE ACHIEVE COMPARATIVELY GREATER SUCCESS THAN OTHER EVENING COLLEGES AS WELL AS DAY COLLEGES TOO. IN RESPECT OF ATTENDANCE, SUCCESS RATE AND BETTER RESULT, PLACEMENT (SPECIALLY IN THE ACADEMIC FIELD) WE CAN CLAIM THAT IT IS ONE OF THE BEST DEPARTMENT UNDER UNIVERSITY OF CALCUTTA ( AS PER VERBAL REPORT FROM REPUTED COLLEGES NEARBY)

LABORATORY FACILITIES:

(a) The Department of Geography has a well- equipped laboratory occupying 1000sq. feet covered area. However, this space is commonly utilized by other two sister colleges i.e.Vidyasagar college and Vidyasagar college for women. Therefore, we face space problems regarding staging of almirahs kept for instruments, seminar libraries, slide and LCD projector show, establishment of GIS Laboratory with computer set up etc. At present, we have two big laboratories in the main building and one laboratory in the new building. There are two faculty rooms adjacent to the laboratory in the main building where theoretical classes related to the practical work are held and one room adjacent to the laboratory in the new building. All theoretical and practical classes of Geography are held within the premises of Department of Geography.

(b) The Department of Geography is enriched with all sorts of equipments necessary for students and other project works. We have sufficient numbers of survey instruments like Prismatic Compass, Dumpy Level, Abneys Level, Theodolite etc. and other instruments, samples and maps like Topographical maps, Rocks and Minerals, Rotameters, Aerial Photographs, Satellite imageries, Beam Compass, Soil sieves, Pocket and Mirror Stereoscopes, Slide, Overhead and LCD projectors, G.P.S. and so many. Recently we set up a GIS Laboratory with the help of GIS software in the Computer center of our college. The students trained themselves in the laboratory in various aspects like remote sensing, thematic mapping and image processing and other aspects. All the instruments are in good working condition. Prismatic compass and Dumpy levels are serviced at regular intervals.

Completion of syllabus:

According to Academic calendar in each class the department of Geography covers all the

units of different modules in due course.

Tutorial/ remedial coaching:

The department conducts tutorial/remedial classes in between the test and final exam. and in

summer recess every year. Besides remedial classes, seminar lectures by 1st. and 2nd. Year

Honours students are arranged every year. This increase student’s creativity and encourage

them to fit themselves in the greater field.

College Examinations:

1. The teachers often conduct regular classroom interactions through question- answer session. It help students how to interact with the fellow students and teachers. It also helps the teachers for finding talents amongst students.

2. Regular class tests (at least 6-8 class tests are held in a year) are also an integral part of the assessing student’s academic standing.

3. Mid-term Examination and test are held in the department for assessment. Academic

problems, if any, of the students are monitored by personal interview and interactions.
