Geography is one of the lengthiest and trickiest optionals for this exam. I took this optional because of my earth science background and because it overlapped with parts of GS1 and GS3 papers. I didn't change my optional in any attempt because I always found it more difficult to prepare a new optional from scratch rather than improving the one already prepared. This optional unfortunately has not performed well in last few years but UPSC is unpredictable, so you have to take your own call.

From my last selection to this selection, the only addition was Himanshu Sharma's notes for human geography, especially geographical thoughts part. I didn't do his coaching but joined 8 tests test series and gave 3 tests. For rest of the tests, I just saw the solutions. I had bought his notes of human geography from the market. Geography is a lengthy optional therefore it should be prepared along with current affairs throughout the year. Paper 1 needs more investment as paper 2 is more like GS, therefore start with paper 1 first. Please solve last year question papers and identify which parts are more important than others and try covering them first. They definitely fetch more marks.

What went wrong in first attempt (2017) when I reached interviews: GEOGRAPHY. Period. End of discussion. I scored 245 (97+148) in geography in 2017. My score in GS was around 434 and Essay was 131. Interviews was also a decent 173. So all in all, while I was quite some way off double digit ranks or so, my entry itself in the list was stopped by geography.

Another mistake which I may have committed in physical geography is that I referred to a lot of sources such as Shabbir sir notes, Savindra Singh, content of Guidance IAS 500+ and some topper notes for some topics etc which led to such a big confusion that I could not fathom simple things.

In retrospect, I feel that not clearing second prelims (2018) was a big boost to my future geography preparation. Now I finally got to apply a lot of Prajit Nair sir (IAS; 290 marks; 2016) strategy which I had read before 2017 mains:

Thereafter I got 2-3 months to improve upon my Geography, in this time I did GUIDANCE IAS notes thoroughly for almost all topics and made my own notes out of it, based on my understanding. I also took Guidance IAS geography test series in winters (After Mains 2018) to ensure I could test myself well before my prelims preparation started in full flow. I could notice some improvements but the fear of geography still remained.

However it will still be wise to use this book very selectively for remaining topics of climatology etc.) I also referred to some topics of Savindra Singh Geomorphology although they are largely covered in Guidance notes.
