I am Tech Support at a small hospital. We already have several of your Travel scanners (20 or 30). The last one that we purchased I am having trouble Calibrating. I have tried 3 different NEW scanners. I have sent two back thinking they are defective. The scans come out dark and fuzzy, basicly unreadable. I have tried the different drivers from the latest on the website to older CDs I have here. I can take a scanner we have already purchased from another user here and it works fine on the PC I'm trying to do the install. This PC is windows XP, but I have also taken the NEW scanner and installed it on my Windows 7 PC and I have the same problem with darkness and fuzzyness. I'm not sure what to do? The company we are purchasing them from isn't going to keep sending replacements, but none of them are working. Do you have any suggentions?

Opening the scanner from its compact form and getting it ready to scan is very easy, and the installation of the software that includes the drivers and the software bundle is very easy. I installed it on a laptop with the Windows 10 OS and there were no issues. One important process is to follow the instruction to not connect the USB cable until the software installation prompts you to do so. This process is actually normal practice when installing USB devices. Once the installation was completed, I placed a document in the feeder and pressed the simplex button. In seconds it scans and appears on the screen. I did the same for a two-sided document using the duplex function. For the first test, I chose .pdf as the file format. You can also scan documents as various image formats and you can scan various types of documents like business cards, etc. You can scan via the Automatic Document Feeder or via the rear scanning tray. In addition, you can initiate the scanning process from the software. There is an abundance of settings available that are too many to mention in this review. You can see all of the features by reading the manual here.

The following are some screenshots to show some of the options, settings, and features available via the software:

The Visioneer Strobe 500 is a unique scanner. It is both a desktop scanner and a mobile scanner in one. It achieves this double life with a docking station that holds the scanner and turns it into a sheetfed duplex scanner. The dock has both a paper feeder and a holding tray to keep the sheets after they are fed through the scanner.

What makes this scanner interesting is that when you want to take it with you, just press the release button on the lower right side and the scanner pops out of the dock. There is a USB cable to connect to a computer and one that connects to the power port so that you can power the scanner through the USB port on your laptop. So you have a duplex scanner that can travel with you.

The scanning software for the Windows side is pretty good. You get Nuance PaperPort for organizing the resulting scans. It works well and is simple to use. For optical character recognition the scanner comes with Nuance OmniPage. This is not the full version, but it does the job. There is also NewSoft Presto! BizCard, Visioneer OneTouch with Kofax VRS technology and of course the TWAIN & WIA Drivers. In Windows, with the TWAIN drivers you can scan directly into other Windows software, like Photoshop or other apps.

Designed with duplex capability, these HP desktop scanners allow you to easily scan single- and double-sided documents in a single pass. Plus, with multi-page feed capability, you can even scan multiple pages at once.

The scanner driver for those supported scanners are built into ExactScan. This way ExactScan is the driver for your scanner and no additional software or driver installation is required. In fact ExactScan can even act as a TWAIN driver and allow scanning from third party applications. Additionally ExactScan can also simply push the resulting image files into third party applications that neither support TWAIN nor ImageCapture themselves.

Fujitsu 7160's is what we use. When I started here 9 years ago we had a HP scanner of sorts. Then the pos software was updated. I spent hours and hours trying to make it function without errors. We broke down and bought a Fujitsu from the POS vendor as suggested. No more problems, ever. Oh, wait, after 4 years of daily use, I had to replace the rubber rollers on a few. Super easy to do. Install once, done. No jams, no calls, We have a dozen or so now. Only time I get a call is when people change desks. The only snag I ran into at the beginning was due to our POS system not keeping up with new drivers. If I installed the 3 year old drivers, again it worked flawlessly.

I know 0 about the Xerox, but tend to agree with jb9 - they are good with printers. Also someone used the word Robust. I like that word. ROBUST!!

We have over 100 Fujitsu fi-7160s throughout our institute, many of which are used heavily. They are robust, easy to set up and easy to use. You can scan directly into most applications without any special setup due to the Twain driver. We also use the included PaperStream program that comes on the scanner software disc. It's very easy to set up multiple scan profiles- selecting destination, file format type, single or duplex, etc. I like that there are two scanner heads, so both sides of the page are scanned in a single pass rather than having to have a complex mechanism to pull the page back in and through a second pass to get the other side. e24fc04721
