Konrad Czapiewski died in tragic circumstances Konrad Czapiewski is dead! Today, on August 26, 2022, we have received extremely depressing information about the death of Dr. Konrad Czapiewski, Prof. IGiPZ PAN. The tragic event took place during a business trip to Mexico. On behalf of the entire PTG community, we join our closest Family and Friends in pain.
Konrad Czapiewski was a geographer. In the years 1998-2003 he graduated from the Faculty of Geography and Regional Studies at the University of Warsaw, specializing in socio-economic geography. Master's thesis entitled The living conditions of the rural population in Poland during the socio-economic transformation were prepared under the supervision of dr hab. Małgorzata Durydiwka. Professionally associated with the Institute of Geography and Spatial Organization of the Polish Academy of Sciences. It is here that in 2010 he defended his doctorate in geographical sciences in the field of economic geography. The basis was the work entitled The concept of the areas of socio-economic success in the countryside and their recognition in the Mazowieckie Voivodeship, the promoter of which was prof. dr hab. Jerzy Banski. In October 2021 he was awarded the degree of habilitated doctor.
Konrad Czapiewski, thanks to his scientific and organizational activities, is well known both on the Polish and international forum. From 2007 he was involved in the work of the Committee for the Spatial Development of the Country of the Polish Academy of Sciences as a member of the Problem Team for Rural Areas, and from 2010 he was a correspondent member of the Local Development Committee of the International Geographical Union. By 2020, he had published over 100 scientific publications, participated in nearly 120 conferences, and was involved in the implementation of 55 research projects (including 10 international).
Konrad Czapiewski was one of the most active members of the Polish Geographical Society, known and extremely liked in the community of Polish geographers. He has been associated with our society since 2003, i.e. from the moment of graduation. From 2006, for three consecutive terms, he was the Treasurer of PTG. His interests focused on the subject of rural development, hence his long-term membership in the Rural Areas Committee of the Polish Geological Society. In the years 2013-1019 he was the Deputy Chairman of the Committee. From 2013, he was the editor-in-chief of the periodical Study of Rural Areas, published by PTG together with the Institute of Geography and Spatial Management of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He was repeatedly appointed to the Competition Jury in the Competition of MA theses in the field of geography, which is organized by our Society. For many years he represented PTG at the EUGEO forum, a European organization associating geographical societies.
Konrad Czapiewski was extremely intensively involved in the preparation of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Polish Geographical Society: it is enough to mention his initiatives, such as 100 villages for the 100th anniversary of the Polish Geographical Society or the 100th anniversary of the Polish Geographical Society in 100 countries. In 2020, he was awarded the PTG Gold Badge for his activities. In 2018, he was awarded a jubilee medal on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of PTG. Konrad Czapiewski was a person with an extraordinary, geographical sensitivity to the surrounding world, which he was able to carefully observe. At this point, it is worth recalling his excellent travel report entitled "Women of Nepal", which we published in 2019 on the pages of PTG.
The sudden and unexpected death of Konrad Czapiewski is an irreparable loss for PTG. Our colleague, a friend who inspired, motivated and supported us, left us. There are common dreams, ideas, started publications, projects and ventures that we will have to implement, unfortunately, without his participation.
Honor his memory!
