Procedures

Part I: Explore the Data

Demographic Data on Austin ISD elementary schools from 4 school years, each 8 years apart (1994, 2002, 2010, 2018) has been downloaded from the Texas Education Agency (TEA) website and is available to explore in the following GoogleSheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1P77ZfKI4gHV-6TSosIvfMd3TiBY0HnzpljIc3Wdb1q4/edit#gid=0. Note the following:

• Each row represents an elementary school in the district.

• Some schools were not yet founded in 1994 and others closed before 2018. Also, TEA did not report on the number or percent of Asian students in 1994.

• EcoDis means economically disadvantaged, and represents the students who qualify for free or reduced lunch from the federal government.

Find a school that has experienced large demographic changes since 1994. It could be a school that you attended or a different school.

Part II: Represent the Data

Use the demographic data from the Google Sheet above on the school of your choice.

• Copy that row into your own Google Sheet. For your reference, all of this data was downloaded from the TEA website.

• Reorganize the data so that it looks like this:

Part III: Further Questions

Answer the following as a journal entry:

• What demographic changes did you notice over time in this school?

• What are some factors that could have contributed to these changes?

• Write 3 questions you have for people in this school community who experienced these changes.
