I've never been a fan of baseball. In fact I've never been a fan of any professional sports. But Tommy Lasorda was a personality too big to be contained in just one category of pop culture. Consequently he became a celebrity, and a part of our general pop culture. His popularity was soaring high in the 80's, so when Sega of America made it their mission to attach their brand to as many celebrities as possible he was one of their first picks.
Tommy Lasorda Baseball was one of the launch titles for the Sega Genesis , and Mr. Lasorda made numerous appearances endorsing the game in TV commercials and magazine ads, often taking a comedic approach by insinuating that playing the game may have become too much of a priority to him, causing him to miss other obligations (like actual baseball games). While it may have been surpassed as time went on by other baseball games when it came to technical feats and realism, Tommy Lasorda's Baseball is still remembered fondly as one of the most enjoyable 16-bit baseball games as well as one of the best launch titles of the Genesis.
Looks like the original box art was based off of one of (or a combination of) the photos above. These are all decent photos to base a portrait of Mr. Lasorda on, but unfortunately... let's just say things didn't turn out as well as other illustrations created for Genesis box covers would go on to achieve. In fact I've seen more than one "top ten worst video game box art covers" lists that included this very game. I ended up making a version that was just an improved copy of the original (making the background blended, fixing the ear issue, correcting his head shape, and improving lighting/contrast/coloring). This is the version for purists I would say. The second version is the one I really like though, and what I consider to be the one he deserves. It features a great photo of him that has been color-adjusted to be as vibrant as it can be, along with the background to remind people of the original cover, and the "Genesis" baseball also included, but moved and integrated more into the background.
I upscaled and cleaned up the signature to make it nice and smooth, and re-created the "BASEBALL" text from scratch in order to make sure the curve and all of the lines were as perfect as I could get them and the different levels & colors were right where they needed to be.
