Believe it or not, before 1960 the only high school on CFB Petawawa was part of Rivercrest School. It was called Camp Petawawa District High School, and it was attended by only 60 grade nines and tens. Then this school was built, and was named after Major General H.A. Panet, a Regular Force Officer. He led a very distinguished career; fighting in the Boer War and WWI, and winning several awards for his honorable service.
At first the school consisted only of the main section, which contained the office, some labs, and the teacher's staff room. In 1968-69 portables were added to augment the school by creating shop and music wings. In 1977-78 the shop portables were removed and an industrial arts wing was built soon after the music wing was built.
General Panet High School's last graduating class was in 2014.
The school closed its doors in the summer of 2014 after 58 years.
General Panet was demolished in August 2016.
A new Canex resides in its place. In 2019 a mural of General Panet High School was mounted on the side of the Canex building. Artwork by John Ellenberger.
