6. Jodha Akbar

Jodhaa Akbar tells the story of the tumultuous love affair between Jalaluddin Mohammad Akbar, the great Mughal emperor who ruled Hindustan, and spirited Rajput princess Jodhaa. It is a film about how love transcends the differences of culture and religion.

The film narrates the conquests that earned Jalaluddin the title of Akbar (the great), his battles with the Mughal rivals, and his romance with the defiant Jodhaa. It also highlights the importance of inter-religious harmony in India’s history.

Although the premise of the movie is that of a political marriage, Akbar falls deeply in love with Jodhaa. She encourages him to be more compassionate towards his subjects and listen to their problems. As a result, he abolishes a discriminatory pilgrimage tax and takes the common folk out of his palace in disguise to witness their struggles for themselves.

Hrithik Roshan, the film’s male lead, is unfailingly impressive in this role. His sensitivity and humility meld with his muscles of steel to create a character who is both awe-inspiring and compelling. Whether during an elephant-taming sequence or when he is shedding his shirt in the presence of Jodhaa, his body language radiates an almost spiritual reverence.

In this way, Gowariker’s film parallels Rushdie’s novel in that it uses a fictional romance to encourage us to reflect on the complexity of Indian history and our relationship with it. And, like the novel, it’s difficult to essentialise.
